You know the film dedicated to the character of Batgirl? We talked about it some time ago and fans of the DC Comics universe were waiting for it with a certain load of hope. Unfortunately Warner Bros. has decided to cancel the film – already cost about 90 million dollars – which therefore not only will not debut at the cinema, but will not even have a release on streaming platforms (in the United States it would have been HBO Max). An official statement has not yet been released but the news, originally published by the New York Post, is finding a growing number of confirmations.
The reasons behind this choice seem to be different. The original piece speaks of very disappointing opinions during the first screenings – the test screenings that are made to collect opinions on the films – which they could not only lead to poor results, but also damage the brand. Others, including Variety and The Wrap, speak instead of a more general willingness on the part of DC to focus solely on possible blockbusters, which evidently Batgirl would not have been.
The film had already been shot in full at the turn of November 2021 and March 2022, with the decision to cancel it therefore occurred during post production. Batgirl / Barbara Gordon would be played by Leslie Grace while behind the camera was the duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, to whom we owe Bad Boys for Life. More than the protagonist and the directors, what aroused great curiosity was the confirmation that Michael Keaton would once again return to play Batman. A return that we will never see at this point.
Fans of the brand can be partially consoled by knowing that just a few days ago the presence of Batman was confirmed, in this case that of Ben Affleck, inside Acquaman 2.
