The montage sent by Eman Rus to the spectators

And then you started working directly on the photos that viewers sent you…

“It was difficult, sometimes the idea of photomontage can come out of nowhere but if a current, political or news event happens, then I’m inspired by that by making couplings and reasoning. In that ‘freestyle’ situation with live emotion it wasn’t easy”.

How did we get to Eman Rus with a profile of more than 158,000 followers and so many other things that happened in between?

“It all started four years ago: I worked in a restaurant and in the meantime I was paying for a master’s degree at the IED. I remember it as if it happened yesterday: after buying my first graphics tablet I started focusing on photomontages. I would take my photos and fit inside the image but smaller; I took pictures of my tenants and put Breaking Bad characters inside the house, and so on. They worked and looked good. Then I started taking scenes from movies and TV series and I inserted them in the city of Florence (where I lived) and Olbia (where I was born). Apparently no one had done it and the Florentines went crazy, I even created a page called FlorenceFantasythen Fantasy Olbia and Fantasy Bologna”.

But you didn’t stop there…

“I felt a bit constrained since there is an end for films and TV series to be used, so I tried to use Italian characters or VIPs. I like to joke and take it very lightly, I used to make fun of them. Apparently this concept was also quite new, like seeing Salvini with boobs and Meloni smoking a joint. So they caught the attention”.

When did you notice that something was running just right?

“During the quarantine there was a real change because as soon as there was an episode I took it and made a photomontage of it informing in a different way. I just call them photomontages and not memes, which are something different like Messi making a hand gesture or Pablo Escobar alone in the pool.”.
