Windows 11 and Windows 10: how to add transparencies in old context menus

Microsoft has been working for years to make Windows graphically more modern and captivating: it tried it for the first time with Windows 8, correcting the shot with Windows 10 and further refining the work done with Windows 11. Despite everything there are elements that still use the “legacy” graphics of Microsoft’s past OSes, such as some right-click context menus. A small app of a few KB aims to solve this specific problem.

The worst aspect of the stylistic inconsistency of the latest versions of Windows is that, as in the case of context menus, the user can come across either a modern version with transparencies made through the “acrylic” material, or an outdated version with color solid and old-fashioned fonts. A small open source app, called TranslucentFlyouts it’s available via GitHuballows you to correct the shot by implementing different types of transparency within the “legacy” context menus, those with old-style graphics.

By downloading and installing the application (which still requires editing the registry and other permissions, to be granted only if you know what you are about to accept), you can customize the style of context menus and other elements with different materials. The user can also add custom borders and increase the impact of shadows, all with an app that is only 80 KB large and does not require installation on the system.

We repeat that, although TranslucentFlyouts is an open source app available for free on GitHub, whose source code is open to everyone, always consider the risk of using third-party tools that have such a profound effect on the operating system. On first launch, the software notifies you of all the operations it performs to change the graphic elements of Windows 10 and Windows 11, with messages that we advise you to read carefully.

TranslucentFlyouts also cannot deal with all types of context menus (especially the older ones), so some parts of the operating system will remain unchanged.
