Zoom has communicated that it will begin to force applications to be updated for the various platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) to maintain a high level of security and provide the latest features. The company will require a minimal version to be able to use the service, which will inevitably end up cutting out older versions of the various operating systems.
Zoom forces the application to be updated periodically
As reported in a page published on Zoom’s support site, the company will begin enforcing a minimum version of the application in order to use the service. Currently the minimum required version is 5.3but Zoom says that every 90 days you’ll be prompted to upgrade to a newer version.
There are three different update channels (fast track, slow track and suggested version) and it is unclear how the company will enforce the change on channel users. It is also unknown which criteria will be used to establish a new minimum version.
Zoom has however made it clear that it will not be possible to use the service if the application is not updated to the minimum version and that users who do not want (or can) upgrade will have to opt for the web version of the service. The implication of that claim is that older operating systems, such as Windows 7, will soon stop being supported.
Companies with centrally managed IT environments will still be able to manually manage the update, so as to maintain control over the version installed on company computers, disabling the automatic search for new versions.
