With the exciting announcement that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, it appears the stakes couldn’t get any higher in the Multiverse Saga. Though he is only asked to play “one more time,” the latest developments may influence Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
With Secret Wars promising to explore the multiverse as no other project has before, many fans are expecting the film to include many alternate-reality heroes when Earth-616’s Avengers are summoned to Battleworld. Some of these multiversal characters may even take the form of heroes that the audience is already familiar with.
Wolverine
Jackman’s Wolverine has been a fan favorite part of Fox’s X-Men franchise, with a tenure that lasted seventeen years until his death in Logan. However, as the multiverse has shown so far in the MCU, even deceased characters can find a way to return for one final adventure.
With news recently breaking that Jackman’s Wolverine will indeed appear in Deadpool 3, the mutant’s involvement in the upcoming Secret Wars film seems all the more likely. The beloved character may even be joined by his fellow X-Men, given that Earth-616’s mutant team will likely not yet be formed by the time Secret Wars releases.
Deadpool
Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool is one of the most highly anticipated characters to be joining the MCU in the Multiverse Saga. After appearing in two films of his own, his third solo outing will release in September 2024 and will officially be considered MCU canon.
Unlike other characters from parallel universes, Deadpool requires very little explanation to turn up in an Avengers crossover. The character’s disposition toward breaking the fourth wall and ignoring lapses of logic means that he can show up in virtually any project without the audience posing too many questions. Though his involvement in Secret Wars may not fit with the film’s darker theme, a quick cameo from the Merc With A Mouth would not be unwelcome for many MCU fans.
The Human Torch (Chris Evans)
Chris Evans may be most famous for his portrayal of Captain America in the MCU, but his first superhero role was actually as a very different Marvel character, appearing as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, in 2005’s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
With audiences still sorely missing Evans’s Captain America following his retirement in Avengers: Endgame, many have hoped to see the actor return to the MCU, even if he takes on a different role. Including his version of the Human Torch would not only give fans their much-needed return from Evans, but it would also go a long way in legitimizing the fun, albeit flawed, first Fantastic Four franchise.
Wanda Maximoff (Earth-838)
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw the Scarlet Witch become corrupted by the Darkhold, using its knowledge to serve her quest to find a universe wherein her sons are alive. During her mission, Wanda hijacks her Earth-838 variant, using her body to slaughter the Illuminati and wreak havoc across the multiverse.
Multiverse of Madness left 838-Wanda still alive, though not without enemies after her slaughter of several major heroes. Many fans have suggested that this version of Wanda may still have more stories to tell, especially if 616-Wanda is truly dead.
Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield)
Andrew Garfield appeared as Peter Parker, otherwise known as Spider-Man, in the character’s 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. Though his franchise ended with the film’s 2014 sequel, his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home has caused many fans to rethink Garfield’s version of the character and call for future appearances from him in the role, including the upcoming Secret Wars film.
Atop rumors that Sony’s cinematic universe of Marvel characters may be set in the same reality as Garfield’s character, many fans believe that his version of the Web-Slinger is the key to an inter-universe crossover that may be sparked by his involvement in the MCU’s Secret Wars event. Should Garfield appear in the film, fans can expect further crossovers between Marvel and Sony’s franchises.
Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire)
Tobey Maguire will forever be hailed as one of the best cinematic versions of Spider-Man, appearing in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which was largely responsible for the surge in superhero movie popularity in the early 2000s. Over a decade after hanging up the webs, Maguire returned in the multiversal hit Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men.
Since his return in No Way Home, fans have been vying for just one more appearance from the original big screen Spider-Man. The character’s story is still very much in need of a proper conclusion, which can finally be granted should he appear in Secret Wars. Fans should be careful what they wish for, however, as the appearance of the senior Spider-Man would no doubt also spell his ultimate doom.
The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton)
For the most part, the MCU has managed to keep its main cast satisfied with their roles for many years at a time, avoiding recasting for most of its major characters. However, one of the few opposing examples is Edward Norton, who portrayed Bruce Banner in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, only to be replaced by Mark Ruffalo for the character’s subsequent appearances in the MCU.
Though Norton did not leave on the best terms with Marvel, the actor has since expressed interest in returning to the franchise, signaling that a meet-up between Ruffalo and Norton’s Hulks may still be possible. Secret Wars is the perfect event for these two variants to meet, as each vies to prove that he is the definitive version of the Hulk.
Mister Fantastic (John Krasinski)
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced audiences to the Illuminati of Earth-838, which was filled with exciting multiversal cameos. One introduction stood out among all the others, however, with John Krasinski becoming the latest actor to play Mister Fantastic after years of fan speculation that he would appear in the role.
While it remains unclear whether Krasinski will be the definitive Reed Richards moving forward following his character’s death in Multiverse of Madness, this variant could still return in future projects regardless of who plays his Earth-616 counterpart. With Fantastic Four already in the works, the first family will likely be brought into the mix for Secret Wars, but fans would love to see the 838 version somehow feature despite his demise at Scarlet Witch’s hands.
Iron Man
Tony Stark’s death in the finale of Avengers: Endgame remains one of the MCU’s biggest tragedies, as fans were forced to say goodbye to the man who began the entire franchise over a decade earlier. While Earth-616’s Iron Man is undoubtedly dead, the multiverse opens up endless possibilities for Tony’s return.
While it is unclear whether Robert Downey Jr. would ever return for a future MCU project, especially one so soon after his character’s demise, this doesn’t mean that other actors couldn’t try their hand at portraying the iconic superhero. In fact, many fans have speculated that Tom Cruise could portray an alternate-reality Stark in an MCU project. No matter who plays the role, a Secret Wars event without Iron Man would feel rather incomplete.
Miles Morales
Though Peter Parker is the Spider-Man that many fans know, his successor, Miles Morales, is equally beloved among Marvel fans. The character, who has appeared in the hit Into the Spider-Verse franchise and several video games, seems like one of the most likely cameos in the upcoming Secret Wars film.
Comics fans know that Miles Morales was originally a part of the Ultimate Universe, a reality separate from that of Marvel’s mainline Earth-616 universe. It was in fact the Secret Wars event of 2015 that introduced Morales to the main Marvel universe. This leads many fans to believe that the same could occur in the MCU, introducing the next Spider-Man by multiversal means.
