PARIS: Three died and four people were wounded, including two critically, after shooting in the vicinity of a Kurdish cultural centre in central Paris, French officials said on Friday.
The Paris prosecutor’s department said a man aged 69 was arrested in this connection. The alleged shooter’s motives were not immediately clear.
The Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that the suspected attacker was known to authorities. She added that authorities would examine any possible racist element behind the shooting.
Police cordoned off the area in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital, and the Paris police department warned people to stay away from the area.
“A gun attack has taken place. Thank you to the security forces for their swift action,” tweeted deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire. “Thoughts for the victims and those who witnessed this drama.”
A witness told French news agency AFP that seven or eight shots had been fired, sewing mayhem in the street.
