In the first 6 months of 2022, approximately 4.2 million electric cars were sold worldwidea figure that includes those BEV (battery electric vehicles) fully electric and those PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles): it is, as it indicates Canalys in its most recent analysis, an increase of 63% compared to the corresponding period last year.

Just over half of these cars, specifically 2.4 million, were sold in China: this is a quantity equal to approximately 26% of the total number of cars sold in this region in the first 6 months of the year, against a figure of 10% in the corresponding period of 2021: sales increased by 118% over the course of 12 months. The main manufacturers are all local, with the only significant exception being Tesla which sold over 200,000 of its own cars in the first half of 2022 in this region.

In the European markets, approximately 1.1 million electric cars were sold between BEVs and PHEVs, a figure that accounts for 20% of the total. In the corresponding period of 2021 this value was equal to 16%: by virtue of the decline in sales of cars in general, there is an increase in sales of electric cars of 9% compared to the first half of 2021. There is a decrease in sales of Plug-In hybrid cars, in favor of fully electric ones: to limit the results the waiting times, which have settled on average over 9 months to obtain a BEV car.

In the United States, sales were just over 410,000 cars, a figure that has allowed us to collect a market share of 6%. In comparison with the same period of 2021, however, there was a strong growth, equal to 62%. It is interesting to note that over 64,000 electric pick-ups were sold during the period, a type of car that is very popular with American consumers.
