Airlines will be able to provide 5G connectivity on their planes, along with previous generations of mobile technology. There European Commissionindeed, it has updated the rules and designated certain frequencies to allow in-flight connectivity. “Passengers on board flights in the EU will be able to use their mobile phones to their maximum capacity and functionality, just like with a terrestrial 5G mobile network“, it is read in a note.

“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European businesses. The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to the possibilities offered by super-fast and high-capacity connectivity,” said Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market.

Since 2008, the Commission has decided to reserve certain frequencies for mobile communications on aircraft, allowing airlines to provide messaging, phone calls and data services to passengers flying to the EU. This regulatory update paves the way for the widespread deployment of 5G services.

Finally, the Commission has modified a decision on the 5 GHz frequency bands, which makes the bands available for Wi-Fi in road transport, for example on cars and buses. The change lays the groundwork for “innovations in the automotive industry and potentially metaverse-related applications.” Member States to make the 5GHz bands available for use in road vehicles”as soon as possible and at the latest by 30 June 2023“.
