In a surprise change, Marvel’s Ant-Man and Captain Marvel sequels will be swapping places in their release schedule.
Schedule changes at Disney/Marvel Studios are not done yet, as Disney made the surprise announcement that two of its 2023 movies are swapping release dates. The new slate shuffle means Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will now arrive in cinemas on February 17, 2023, while The Marvels will drop back to July 28, 2023. It seems like an odd change but could be down to several reasons around filming and editing, or even just the relevance of the movie plot to the other projects releasing around them.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brings Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly back to screens as the respective titular heroes in a story that will heavily feature the Quantum Realm, Kang the Conqueror and potentially the multiverse. While most of the filming on the new movie was wrapped last year, Rudd and the team were back in front of the camera again earlier this year in Atlanta, Georgia. As well as Jonathan Majors return as Kang, the film will also bring back Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, and introduces Kathryn Newton as the new Cassie Lang and Bill Murray in a possible secondary villain role.
The Marvels brings together Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Velani as Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel in a follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel, as well as Disney+ shows WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. Just like the Ant-Man sequel, The Marvels completed filming late last year, but that doesn’t mean that there will not be reshoots still to complete considering the film is going to have connections to this summer’s Ms. Marvel series. There is also a possibility that the movie will connect with Samuel L. Jackson’s Secret Invasion series, which was originally planned to arrive on Disney+ this year but now looks like it could move back to early 2023. If there is a connection between these projects, that could be the reason for pushing the film back to the summer.
The MCU’s Interconnecting Stories Can Have a Big Impact on Release Dates
As has been seen in the past, the MCU is taking its interconnected storytelling to a new level, but that comes with a lot of risks when it comes to releasing movies and TV shows in a certain order. After coming out of Covid lockdowns, there was a long period of adjustment needed to ensure that Marvel Studios had enough time to complete post-production work and other shooting without rushing out any of their upcoming movies and TV series.
After giving all of their movies a big push down the line at the end of last year, it seemed that everyone was back on track and Marvel’s slate was set in stone. Currently, there are around many Marvel projects either filming, in post-production, or just about to get cameras rolling, and while they have mostly managed to get back on track, it seems there is still the potential for further schedule adjustments being made to ensure everything ends up looking just right on screen.
