Further details are slowly beginning to drip through regarding why director Justin Lin so suddenly departed the upcoming action movie, Fast X. And each of them is even grubbier than the last. The latest report from The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that Lin walked away from the high-profile project after having a “major disagreement” with star Vin Diesel on April 23.
Attending a four-person meeting, Diesel reportedly arrived with new notes —something Justin Lin was understandably unhappy with, considering he believed the script to be finished. The meeting ended with “a slammed door,” with sources saying that “Justin finally had enough and said, ‘This movie is not worth my mental health.’”
While neither Justin Lin nor Vin Diesel have commented on this report, a Universal spokesperson told has since said, “Any creative differences leading to Justin Lin’s exit were with the studio, not with fellow producers, cast or crew.” The claims continue, saying that Lin quit Fast X in the “heat of the moment,” with the studio taking him seriously. After a quick turnaround, a settlement was reached on April 25, with Justin Lin now due to stay on as a producer. While many of the crew who had worked alongside the filmmaker on previous installment F9 wondered whether they should leave, Lin reportedly “gave his blessing that they should stay on.”
Justin Lin revealed his departure from the project on social media, saying in a statement; “With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of FAST X, while remaining with the project as a producer. Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the FAST family.”
Louis Leterrier Will Sit in the Driver’s Seat and Direct Fast X
With Justin Lin walking away and production ready to go, the studio quickly found a replacement in The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier. Known for such action flick as The Transporter, Transporter 2, and Clash of the Titans, as well as the crime caper Now You See Me and the Marvel outing The Incredible Hulk, Leterrier should make a good fit for the Fast and Furious franchise. Still, he has a lot to live up to taking over from Justin Lin, who has been instrumental in the action series’ success. Hopefully, he will have more patience for the ridiculous demands and high maintenance of lead actor Vin Diesel.
