Amazon Prime will be jointly releasing Ron Howard’s next, Thirteen Lives, instead of the film going for a wide theatrical release. Earlier, the film was scheduled to release in theaters this fall on November 18, delayed from an April 2022 release. However, the plans for the film have now changed after Amazon acquired MGM in an $8.45 Billion deal two months earlier.

According to The Playlist, Thirteen Lives will get a limited theatrical release this summer, followed by a worldwide streaming release on Amazon Prime. The decision came per Amazon’s new event strategy for summer releases and hints at Amazon’s future calls for its newly acquired properties via MGM. Moreover, with the change in the decision concerning the release, Thirteen Lives will return to its previous summer release schedule. Amazon is now set to release the film in August 2022 after a short theatrical run.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the past two years, Amazon has released several original films and television productions straight to streaming, partially due to the halt in theater operations during the pandemic. During that time, the change in people’s consumption manners allowed streaming platforms like Prime to strategize the production of original content that the audience could directly access on the web. HBO Max’s day-and-date release was also a facet of the shift in content consumption worldwide. Furthermore, now that Amazon Prime Day is nearing, Thirteen Lives could find a slot for release that day on the platform.

Now that Amazon has several other MGM properties, the audience may see the likes of the James Bond Franchise heading to Prime Video soon and many more getting a rework. There’s no telling if Amazon will use all MGM productions as Prime Video exclusives or maintain wide theatrical releases for some of them, but the platform will be filled with a new line of stories very soon.

Thirteen Lives Brings the Heroic Rescue Mission to Life

Thirteen Lives is based on the rescue mission of twelve teenagers and their assistant coach, who were trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Thailand. The team had entered the cave for a football practice session and was trapped after a heavy rainfall blocked their way out. After eighteen days, the stranded members were rescued by a group of divers in a challenging extraction mission.

While a group of British and Thai divers attempted the dangerous mission, they also received immense help and technical advice from across the globe via both public and private sector units and organizations. This led to worldwide attention towards the incident over those three weeks.

Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives is set to star Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Sukollawat Kanarot. William Nicholson, famous for penning Howard’s Academy Award-winning film Gladiator (2000), has written the film. Before Thirteen Lives, a Thai movie, The Cave, also covered the incident and the subsequent rescue efforts.

Thirteen Lives is a significant release from MGM and famously received the best test scores in preview screenings. Shot in Australia, Thirteen Lives will now release on Amazon Prime in August 2022. No specific date of release has been decided yet.
