Stranger Things 4 will be the longest season of the entire series. And it turns out that the final episodes of the season have to do a lot with that. In an interview with The Wrap, the show’s creators and directors, the Duffer Brothers have confirmed that the season finale will be of feature film length in terms of run time.

The conclusive season of Netflix’s hit series, Stranger Things 4, has already been split up into two volumes to account for the vastly spread plot lines and overall story. In Season 3, the primary Hawkins residents split up after Jim Hopper was pronounced dead. Eleven, along with Byers’s family, shifted to a different location. Now, Stranger Things 4, which is set six months after the previous season, will begin with a plot that is already spread out, making its production scale and scope already larger than the previous seasons. And to tell that story, Duffer Brothers have ensured that timing does not remain a constraint.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Talking to The Wrap about splitting the season into two volumes, Matt Duffer said:

A lot of it had to do with the fact that we had characters spread out in three locations, and we had a lot more plot. It must be quadruple the plot we had in Season 3. The more we were writing, the more we realized we need more time in order for these reveals to land, in order for these storylines to work.

Refraining from revealing story details, Matt revealed that Episodes Seven and Nine are longer than any other episodes of the season.

Seven and nine in particular are movies. And nine is a long movie.

Revealing the length of the episode, Ross Duffer added:

We’re still refining it [ninth episode] but we will say that it is over two hours. It’s a big one.

With that, the ninth episode of Stranger Things 4 will become the longest episode of the show. Earlier, the Season 3 finale was the longest episode, clocking at 78 minutes. Previous episodes of Stranger Things have always neared at least an hour in run-time and now, with Season 4, the show will become more massive than ever.

The Creators Squeezed In The Final Episode For Stranger Things 4

Season 1 and Season 3 of Stranger Things had eight episodes each while Season 2 had nine. Stranger Things 4 was always going to have longer episodes but had eight episodes. The show was decided to have two volumes to ensure that the fans could binge-watch the show without breaks amidst longer episodes. But, turns out that wasn’t enough. The ninth episode, which the Duffer Brothers claim to be two hours long, was not in the plan during the early stages of production.

To make up for their long story and the numerous plot lines, the Duffer Brothers brought Netflix into the fold and made the producers agree to add another episode. Matt Duffer explained,

Partway through we knew we needed to ask Netflix for nine episodes instead of eight and as we started shooting we realized, Oh these are mega-long episodes.

It’s possible that each episode of Stranger Things 4 will be longer than an hour, making the season the longest in the entire series. This means, that each time the audience streams an episode, they’ll be treated to a little movie. The trailer of Stranger Things 4 has already teased several surprising developments, including El losing her power. And it would be thrilling to see it all unravel in the long episodes spread out into two volumes.

Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1 will stream on Netflix from May 27, 2022, whereas Vol. 2 will stream from July 1, 2022.
