Top Gun 2 had an incredible second weekend at the box office to remain far above the competition.
The hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick continues to obliterate the competition at the box office. After an impressive debut in theaters last weekend, which saw the movie draw a whopping $124 million, Maverick stands tall in the No. 1 spot once again for its second weekend with another $86 million earned in North American theaters. The film has set the record as lead star Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing domestic release ever, a tremendous accomplishment given all of the blockbusters the A-lister has starred in.
Even with Top Gun: Maverick in its second weekend, the competition did not even come close. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness falls into the No. 2 spot with $9.2 million earned in the U.S. and Canada. This comes with the Marvel movie’s fifth weekend in theaters as the movie prepares to become available for streaming on Disney+ later this month. That film has of course been a tremendous hit on its own before getting to this point.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie maintains its No. 3 spot with its second weekend in theaters. It has fallen by 64% compared to its opening weekend by drawing $4.5 million, putting its domestic total up to $22.2 million. The animated feature The Bad Guys drew $3.3 million in its seventh weekend while Downton Abbey: A New Era followed with $3 million in its third weekend to round out the top five for this week. Everything Everywhere All at Once has also managed to score more than $60 million at this point in the No. 6 spot, making the acclaimed movie the highest-grossing A24 release.
Top Gun: Maverick Has Been a Huge Success While Morbius Flopped
It’s also worth noting that Morbius returned to theaters this weekend after a relentless internet campaign. Despite the film’s bad reviews, there had been enough chatter on social media about bringing it back that Sony actually put the film back into theaters with the hopes of making more money on the panned feature. But perhaps most of the social media promises about seeing Morbius when it returned were not meant to be taken seriously, as Morbius bombed with just $300,000 earned from more than 1000 theaters. The film did not even crack the top ten list.
We’ll see how Top Gun: Maverick continues to perform in the coming weeks, but the film has already proven to be a tremendous theatrical hit. You can check out more detailed box office information at The Numbers, and you can see the full top ten list for this weekend with the list below.
