A Pakistani restaurant has kicked up a social media uproar for sharing a distasteful advertisement. The restaurant was promoting a special “Men’s Monday” discount but they used a scene from ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ in which Alia Bhatt, who played a sex worker in the film, was seen propositioning men on the Mumbai streets.

In the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directorial Alia Bhatt earned accolades for playing the role of a sex worker who climbed through the ranks to become a powerful brothel owner. However, in one of the painful yet hard-hitting scenes from the film, she was seen outside a building in search of clients.

This specific scene grabbed the attention of a Karachi-based restaurant as they advertised a special men’s-only discount. “Aja na Raja – what are you waiting for?” the restaurant wrote on Instagram.

The promotional stunt didn’t go well with netizens as many users flooded the comments section taking a dig at the restaurant owners.

“You guys are using such a painful scene for your advertisement? Are you for real?” one Instagram user slammed them.

“Such crass advertising,” another wrote, while one user took a dig and wrote, “Delete this asap. What a shame.”

After facing such heavy criticism, the restaurant responded admitting that they didn’t want to hurt sentiments using the advertisement. “Arey logon, itna dil pe kyun le liya? Movie kare tou aag, restaurant kare tou paap?” the restaurant shared another post. It roughly translates to “Why are you taking this to heart? If a movie does this, it is fine. If a restaurant does it, it’s a sin?”

“Just a concept. We didn’t mean to hurt the sentiments of anyone. The movie and this post is based on a concept,” the restaurant further clarified. However, the damage was already inflicted and their clarification couldn’t stop the backlash.
