Vegeta only has a few scenes in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but one of them makes no sense with what his character arc is supposed to be.

SPOILERS for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Dragon Ball Super volume 17.For some reason, it seems like Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero completely forgot what Vegeta’s current character arc in Dragon Ball is. Super Hero was focused more on Piccolo, Gohan, and other supporting members of the cast, so Vegeta didn’t end up doing much in the movie. One of the few scenes he did have, however, completely went against what his most recent character arc in the anime has been, and it even contradicts the development he’s gone through in the manga.
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku and Vegeta are training on Beerus’ planet once again, and while Goku is sparring with Broly, Vegeta is trying to meditate. When Goku asks Vegeta about it, he says that he’s trying to clear his mind so that he’ll be able to move without thinking like Jiren. Barring Dragon Ball‘s gods of destruction and angels, Jiren is still one of the strongest characters in the entire franchise, so it makes sense that Vegeta would want to close the gap between them.
The problem with Vegeta’s new training, however, is that it contradicts his current character arc. During the Tournament of Power, after failing to achieve Ultra Instinct, Vegeta accepted that it wasn’t right for him and resolved to find his own way to become stronger. Because of that, it doesn’t make any sense for Vegeta to be talking about wanting to move without thinking, which is the exact principle that Ultra Instinct is based around.
Vegeta’s Super Hero Moment Doesn’t Make Sense With Ultra Ego
What makes Vegeta’s moment in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero even weirder is how it contradicts what he does in the manga. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Vegeta’s resolve to find his own path to power eventually culminated in him developing Ultra Ego, a transformation that served as the antithesis to Ultra Instinct by making him stronger whenever he took damage. While the manga isn’t exactly the same as the anime, the general events are still canon to the franchise, so it doesn’t make sense for Super Hero to have Vegeta contradict something that serves as the most logical progression of his character.
All in all, Vegeta’s desire to move without thinking in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero comes off as very inconsistent with how his character is supposed to be. Not only does it contradict his dismissal of Ultra Instinct in the Tournament of Power, but it doesn’t work with his eventual development of Ultra Ego in the manga. Even if it was just one scene, the movie does seem to backtrack on Vegeta’s character, but hopefully whatever the next installment in the Dragon Ball franchise is will try to fix it.
