Joseph Gordon-Levitt officially joins the cast of the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop 4, which sees the return of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has officially joined the cast of Eddie Murphy’s long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop 4. Released in 1984, the action comedy film stars Murphy as Axel Foley, a rebellious, fast-talking Detroit police officer who journeys to Beverly Hills to investigate the death of his childhood friend. Beverly Hills Cop was a hit with audiences and critics and was followed by two sequels, the most recent of which, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994. Although the third installment was a disappointment both critically and commercially, Beverly Hills Cop 4 has long been in the works.

Murphy revealed last year that a script for the sequel was still in the works and that filming would only begin once he was happy with the story. The rights to Beverly Hills Cop 4 were acquired by Netflix several years ago, with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah attached to direct. Both El Arbi and Fallah ultimately parted ways with the project to focus on the now-cancelled Batgirl film, with Mark Molley announced as their replacement earlier this year. While story details for the film remain under wraps, producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently confirmed that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is about to begin filming. Now, casting details for the new film have emerged.

Per a new report from Deadline, the new film, now officially titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, has added Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige to the cast. While their roles in the film remain unknown, the upcoming project marks the actor’s first feature film since 2020’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, with the star recently having turned his attention to TV with the likes of Super Pumped and Mr. Corman. Paige, on the other hand, is best known for her roles in Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and White Boy Rick.

While Gordon-Levitt is no stranger to comedy films, Beverly Hills Cop 4 marks the actor’s first return to the genre since 2015’s The Night Before. It’s unclear how prominently Gordon-Levitt will feature in the upcoming film, but Beverly Hills Cop 4 is his second buddy cop story in under two years, with the actor having recently appeared in Project Power. With the news of Gordon-Levitt and Paige’s casting, it remains unclear if any original stars will be returning for the upcoming film, including Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as Detective Rosewood and Sergeant Taggart, respectively.

lt’s possible that, in lieu of bringing back some of the franchise’s original police officer characters, both Gordon-Levitt and Paige will represent Foley’s new partners for whatever case he tackles next. With filming on Beverly Hills Cop 4 expected to start very soon, it’s likely that more details about Gordon-Levitt and Paige’s roles will be released in the coming weeks. For now, fans of the series can revisit earlier installments, with the first three Beverly Hills cop movies streaming on Paramount+.
