DC’s new Shazam and her stunning costume takes the spotlight in a brand new comic book cover that shows off Batgirl in her newest role in Dceased.
Warning! Spoilers for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods by DC Comics
In a brand-new cover art starring Cassandra Cain, the hero best known for being Batgirl in the main DCU embraces her role as Shazam in the DCeased universe. In the new variant art from Sun Khamunaki for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #6 by DC comics, Cassandra Cain’s Cazzam and her incredible new powers are on full display. The stunning cover features Cassandra Cain taking on her new role in a dark universe.
In the DCeased universe, the DC Universe has been transformed into a dark reflection of its former self filled with the undead after Darkseid’s Anti-Living virus wreaked havoc across the galaxy. Cassandra Cain, who started the alternate universe story as her usual role as Batgirl, became DC’s new Shazam after assisting John Constantine while searching the Rock of Eternity for magical artifacts to help her fellow survivors in their battles against undead. Cain’s Shazam is one of the heroes in the newly formed Justice League – as the heroes look to cure those infected with the Anti-Living Virus.
On his Twitter account, DCeased: War of the Undead Gods writer Tom Taylor shared a new cover art for the series’ sixth issue. Taylor wrote that after Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl received the powers of Shazam in DCeased: Dead Planet, that there have been plenty of requests for the hero and her amazing new costume to star solo on a cover. Ask and you shall receive, as new variant art from Sun Khamunaki showcases Batgirl as the powerful Justice League hero Shazam, which Taylor playfully refers to as “Cazzam.”
The new cover art featuring the new Shazam in the DCeased Universe is epic. Fans of the hero have waited for her own solo cover art since her transformation in DCeased, with the only cover appearance for the former Batgirl being a group-shot homage cover. In the new art, an unmasked Cassandra Cain’s powers can be seen as her eye light-up and lightning forms around her. The dark look captures the former Batgirl’s new costume extremely well, as it perfectly blends her Bat-Family ensemble with her new role in the world.
Cassandra Cain was already a fan-favorite hero, but her characterization in the Dceased Universe has given her a much-deserved bigger role as a Justice Leaguer as DC’s new Shazam. While the former Batgirl becoming Shazam was one of the last predictions readers could have made, the hero’s new moniker and powers ended up making a great version of an already important character. Hopefully, the cover, which appears to be an open-order variant and arrives in comic book stores in December as the DCeased: War of the Undead Gods continues, is the first of many for Cassandra Cain’s dark Shazam.
