Many people have said Bruce Wayne could solve all of Gotham’s problems by just throwing money at them, but the reality is a lot harder.
For as much as Bruce Wayne does when he dons the cowl and goes out as Batman, he does just as much if not more from the boardroom of Wayne Enterprises. Many people have criticized Bruce Wayne for not doing enough for Gotham, but you can’t solve every problem by just throwing money at it.
Some fans have used the argument in the past that Bruce Wayne could solve every problem in Gotham if he just re-invested his vast wealth into the city instead of just going out at night and beating people. It’s understandable why people would make this argument considering the vast majority of Batman comics involve him fighting criminals and solving crimes, but that’s mostly because comics tend to need action-packed stories, especially for one of the biggest comic characters on the planet. But this doesn’t mean Bruce Wayne has never tried to use his money to enact change in Gotham, it just isn’t as easy as one would think.
Bruce has used his money on numerous occasions to try and make Gotham a better place. There are dozens of examples of Bruce spending his fortune on philanthropic causes, from giving money to the homeless, to the fact Wayne Enterprises offers all employees a college scholarship with full paid tuition. Batman has even offered the henchmen of a villain jobs at Wayne Enterprises. His charity work is also undeniable, as he has built libraries, hospitals, and orphanages. Bruce Wayne is every bit the hero Batman is. The reason Gotham isn’t getting any better isn’t because of Bruce Wayne’s lack of trying, but because of something much darker.
All of Bruce Wayne’s Charity Is Not Enough To Save Gotham
The real reason Gotham can’t just get better is shown perfectly in the story “Balyushka!” by Mark Russell and Viktor Bogdanovic that first appeared in 2019’s Villains Giant #1. In the story, Joker promises to pay for everyone’s health care if they just record a video that Joker might enjoy. This naturally causes absolute panic and destruction in Gotham and when Batman finally catches Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime points out he hasn’t technically done anything illegal. Realizing that the problem is much more societal than just Joker himself, Bruce goes to a meeting with the other richest residents of Gotham to try and see if together they can re-invent Gotham’s health care system. Instead, the other attendees decide to just increase the cost of student loans to cover the health care. This isn’t even to mention the numerous wealthy villains Bruce would have to contend with, such as the Penguin or the entire secret society Court of Owls, who would most definitely not allow some billionaire to try and influence the city they operate in.
The entire reason Bruce Wayne became Batman was that he had to. If Gotham City could have just been saved with a few written checks here or there, that would have been a much easier life than the one Bruce chose. Despite his war cry, Bruce isn’t about vengeance, he’s about saving people and saving the city that he loves. Unfortunately, while money alone is not enough to totally save Gotham City, it can certainly help, which is why Gotham needs Bruce Wayne as much as it needs Batman.
