A hilarious yet heartwarming coming-of-age history, Catherine Called Birdy recently debuted on Amazon Prime Video. Birdy (Bella Ramsey) is a 14-year-old girl who refuses to accept medieval society conventions and tries to find a way to escape her father’s (Andrew Scott) selection of suitors for marriage.

Even though the movie is set in medieval times, it’s very relevant today, with the female characters being objectified and having to fight for their right to decide over their own lives. Through Birdy’s lenses, the story portrays many complex and layered characters and the way they struggle with the arbitrary and unfair designs of their society.

10/10 Shaggy Beard (Sir John Henry Mungaw)

Birdy’s terrible almost future husband, Shaggy Beard is definitely the least likable character in the movie. He’s an older man who decided to marry a fourteen-year-old girl, in spite of being very well aware of her deep dislike of him and even taking pleasure in humiliating her.

Not only is Henry spiteful but also a coward, as he shows at the end of the movie when he doesn’t commit to the duel and tries to steal Birdy, in spite of losing. Mungaw is a representation of a creepy man trying to wed a young girl, and as such, not only the most terrible character in Catherine Called Birdy, but one of the worst ones in television.

9/10 Robert

Even though Robert starts acting nice almost at the end of the movie, his character is hard to like for most of the film. Viewers enjoy that Birdy’s brother gets to have a happy ending with Aelis, and that Aelis will continue to live on Birdy’s grounds. However, Robert’s attitude in most of the movie makes him a bit unlikeable.

Not only does Robert belittle his little sister at every opportunity, but when her marriage arrangement is finalized he throws it in her face. Hopefully, Robert and Birdy will have a better relationship now that Robert is married thanks to his sister’s sacrifice.

8/10 Uncle George

Uncle George is one of the few men in the movie that Birdy actually likes. However, as pleasant and kind as he tries to be with the girl, George’s passivity eventually makes him unlikeable. Even though he sees his niece suffering, he does nothing about it and only wallows in his own misery.

It’s understandable that George probably was unable to marry Aelis since he clearly lacks land or money. However, as a man, George wasn’t forced to be in an unhappy marriage. Still, he seems determined to be miserable, even though Ethelfritha is more than open to offering him freedom and comfort – on top of her money.

7/10 Lord Rollo

Although Birdy’s father plays the role of the main antagonist for most of the movie, the way in which he finally shows his daughter that he loves her and saves her from an unhappy marriage ends up gaining him the audience’s appreciation. Plus, Andrew Scott’s acting is terrific, making Lord Rollo one of the best male movie characters who aren’t tough.

However, the way in which he talks about Birdy for most of the movie, and the fact that he was willing to make Birdy marry the first man who offered money for her doesn’t help in making him one of the most likable characters. It’s understandable that he had to make a difficult decision, but it was only because he was terrible at administrating his own money.

6/10 Aelis

Birdy’s best friend and one of the other ladies in the movie who struggles with forced marriage, Aelis is a kind character with a good heart. Even though Birdy feels betrayed because the girl “stole” the love of her uncle, Aelis just followed her heart in a situation in which Birdy didn’t have real reasons to object.

Not only is Aelis a loyal friend, but also she forgives Birdy for mistreating her without reason Later on, Birdy gives her brother all her money just so Aelis can marry him. With its ups and downs, Birdy and Aelis’s relationship blooms throughout the movie making Catherine Called Birdy one of the best movies about childhood friendship.

5/10 Edward

Even though Edward lives far away because he dedicated his life to serving as a monk, he tries to be a good influence on his little sister and give her some comfort in her difficult situation. It seems Edward understands Birdy’s situation better than Robert, although he can’t help much.

However, Edward teaches Birdy to express her emotions through writing, which turns out to be an excellent idea since this is what allows Birdy to reflect and understand her feelings. Even though she doesn’t really appreciate the books he suggests for her to read, it’s obvious Edward has the best intentions at heart.

4/10 Lady Aislinn

Even though Catherine Called Birdy is a feel-good movie, Birdy’s mother has had a very difficult life. Most viewers can’t help to empathize with Lady Aislinn since she’s faced many hardships, having had six dead babies in the last few years. On top of that, she has no choice in whatever happens to her daughter, having to witness her fate without being able to interfere.

Still, Lady Aislinn is a terrific mother, who tries to give her daughter the best advice and makes time to spend quality time with her. Additionally, whenever she has the possibility, she tries to give Birdy more opportunities, such as when she forces her father into giving Birdy more time without marriage.

3/10 Birdy

Even though Birdy is the main character of the movie, and there’s no doubt she’s a very likable character, she’s not the first one on that list. Birdy shows a lot of growth during the film, but at the beginning, she lacked tact and empathy towards her friends and family.

Birdy could be rash and impulsive with her comments, such as when she tells Perkins that he was lucky because he didn’t have a dad. However, the girl recognizes her mistakes and starts being a better friend, and even tries to help her brother, Robert, even though he’s terrible to her. This character’s growth makes Catherine Called Birdy one of the best female-led coming-of-age stories.

2/10 Morwenna

Morwenna is Birdy’s nurse and also practically her mother. She’s always in a good mood, and she’s probably the person who understands Birdy the most. On top of that, the nurse takes care of the girl like no one else does, giving her all the tips she needs to make her period as easy as possible.

Even though Birdy feels betrayed when Morwenna points out to her mother that the girl is hiding her period, the woman does it because she believes this is the best for Birdy. In spite of Birdy’s reaction, it’s obvious no one cares about the girl like Morwenna does, being the most scared when the girl escapes to her Uncle George’s house.

1/10 Perkin

As Birdy’s charming and most loyal friend, Perkin is an amazing character. He’s always in a good mood and tries to cheer Birdy every time he sees her. Sometimes he pranks her, such as when he tells her a weird story about how babies are made, but it’s all in good fun.

On top of this, Perkin is kind and forgiving, even though Birdy is mean to him several times. Their friendship is the most wholesome one in the movie, with Perkin consoling Birdy about her forced marriage and Birdy being supportive of Perkin’s sexuality, both understanding each other’s particular struggles.
