It is really a testament to how much of a hero Okoye is that she joins the other big MCU characters in the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Not only is she an asset to have on the battlefield for her skills as a fighter, but also because of her rational way of thinking.
After Wanda Maximoff joins the fight and uses her powers to hurl the enemy machines across the battlefield, Okoye answers the obvious question as to why she wasn’t part of the battle all along. Okoye is a blunt person and when she asks a question, it is one that is worth asking.
8/10 “Guns. So Primitive.”
One of the reasons why Okoye is a likely candidate for the next Black Panther is that she is likely Wakanda’s greatest warrior now that T’Challa is gone. And she also takes pride in the fact that her fighting style draws on centuries of Wakandan warriors rather than firearms.
When facing off with Klaue’s crew of goons, they open fire on her and Nakia. Not only do they not flinch at the bullets, but Okoye also gives such a dismissive and unimpressed reaction. It gives her that fearless and stoic persona she carries so well.
7/10 “When She Wants To.”
Though Okoye is supportive of T’Challa’s decision to open Wakanda up to the world, she also seems to be very wary of anything outside her home country. She is also very protective of what it means to be a Wakandan.
When meeting Everett Ross for the first time, she speaks to T’Challa in Xosha, not willing to let Ross in on their conversations. When he asks T’Challa if she speaks English, Okoye responds in a way that shows how guarded she can be and how she doesn’t feel the need to pander to outsiders.
6/10 “Wakanda Survived For So Long By Only Fighting When Absolutely Necessary.”
Though Killmonger proves himself the best MCU villain in the minds of many fans because of his sympathetic views, the violence he suggests is where it gets hard to cheer for him. Among the Wakandas, Okoye is one of the few who stands up against his plans.
Even though she might be a skilled warrior who is always ready to jump into the fight, Okoye knows the difference between needing to fight and wanting to. She knows Wakanda is powerful enough, but also that they are not conquerors.
5/10 “If He Touches You Again I’m Going To Impale Him On This Desk.”
Okoye’s number one priority at all times is the protection of her king. That is why it will be so devastating to see how she deals with T’Challa’s death in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In many ways, she can seem like an older sibling with her protective nature feeling a bit extreme at times.
This is especially true when Okoye and T’Challa find themselves outside of Wakanda. While having a tense conversation with Ross, the CIA man gently touches T’Challa which doesn’t sit well with Okoye at all. It is an oddly sweet threat of major violence.
4/10 “You Froze.”
Though she is a dedicated protector of T’Challa, there is enough respect between Okoye and her king that she can also speak freely around him. It makes their relationship all the more charming and creates fun moments like this.
When T’Challa is about to go into battle to save Nakia, Okoye reminds him not to freeze when he sees her. And when T’Challa does, she does not hold back in reprimanding him for it. There is a sense that Okoye helped train T’Challa to be the warrior he is and she expects the best from him.
3/10 “Then It Will Be The Noblest Ending In History.”
Despite being one of the MCU heroes without superpowers, Okoye is also one of the bravest. She faces danger without any hesitation and even the end of the universe doesn’t scare her as it does to some people.
When facing Thanos’ army in Avengers: Infinity War, M’Baku remarks that this appears to be the end of Wakanda. While Okoye doesn’t give him false confidence, she simply faces the prospect with her head held high and the knowledge that they will go out fighting.
2/10 “For Wakanda? Without Question.”
One of the underdeveloped relationships in Black Panther is between Okoye and W’Kabi. Though they don’t have nearly enough screen time together and there are a lot of characters Okoye should have been with besides W’Kabi, there is an interesting conflict that arises between them.
When T’Challa returns, Okoye and W’Kabi find themselves on opposite sides of the fight as he chooses to back Killmonger. As they face off, he questions if she would really kill him, but she definitively lets him know where her priorities lie.
1/10 “I Am Loyal To That Throne, No Matter Who Sits On It.”
Fans got a chance to see the complexity of Okoye in Black Panther as Killmonger takes the throne. Though she loves T’Challa like family, she chooses not to go with Nakia and the others, because it is her duty to serve the throne, not just T’Challa.
This will surely come into play in the sequel as well as she will show the same support and mentorship for whoever takes up the throne. It is part of the reason Okoye is one of the key characters in ensuring Wakanda’s future.
