The Zatanna movie from Promising Young Woman writer Emerald Fennell is no longer at HBO Max, but is being shopped to other streaming platforms.
HBO Max has scuttled plans to platform Zatanna, a live-action adaptation of the comic book that runs under the DC banner. The Zatanna movie is set to be part of the Justice League Dark initiative, a bold endeavor sponsored by Warner Bros that is headlined by lesser known heroes and foes of the DC universe, with J.J. Abrams leading the charge. If seen through to completion, the Zatanna movie will be one of just a few DC films with a female protagonist.
Zatanna first appeared in the pages of DC comic books in 1964 as a mystical heroine in search of her father Giovanna Zatara, one of the first DC characters to have supernatural abilities. Zatanna, who dons magician’s assistant costume complete with fishnets and a top hat, can manipulate people and matter through spells cast by saying words backwards. The character has appeared alongside Batman and other members of the Justice League, but has maintained periphery status in the DC universe with just a smattering of live-action appearances on the small screen.
The Zatanna movie will not move forward at HBO Max and the team is actively seeking a new streaming partner, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The script for Zatanna is being penned by multi-talented actress, writer and director Emerald Fennell, who earned an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as the scribe behind Promising Young Woman. Zatanna is being produced by J.J. Abrams, but the captain of the Justice League Dark universe was helped to a double dose of bad news as both Zatanna and his Constantine reboot series were removed from HBO Max’s docket.
What Zatanna Moving From HBO Max Means For Justice League Dark
The Justice League Dark project was first announced in 2020 as a partnership between Abrams’ production company Bad Robot and Warner Bros. While there has been much buzz about Abrams’ Justice League Dark universe, no content has made it to the screen as of yet, with some reports of creative differences stagnating it. The Zatanna movie reportedly still has the green light, but losing the host site for its release evokes memories of the Batgirl film, another female-led project that was scrapped even after it was shot and edited.
HBO Max cutting the Zatanna film from its network is an unequivocally negative sign for the project, but, there are still many unknowns that could one day help save the project. If WB were able to attract a big-name star to portray Zatanna for the live-action movie, it may catch audiences’ interest in the project, especially as some have already thrown out the likes of Dua Lipa and The Witcher‘s Anya Chalotra as good candidates for the part. Zatanna will hopefully find a new streaming home soon, and kick off the Justice League Dark projects.
