Years after working together on Man on Fire, Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning reunite in the first photos for The Equalizer 3 as filming begins.
Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning reunite in the first The Equalizer 3 photos as filming begins. Denzel Washington launched a new movie franchise in 2014 when he partnered up with director Antoine Fuqua for The Equalizer. His debut as Robert McCall was met with mixed reviews, but the film made nearly $200 million worldwide for Sony Pictures. The studio took its time developing Denzel Washington’s first sequel, as The Equalizer 2 released four years later to a very similar reception critically and financially. The franchise play for Denzel Washington and Antonie Fuqua is officially continuing with The Equalizer 3, which has a September 2023 release date.
During the development of the threequel, one of the most exciting updates came in regard to who would appear alongside Denzel. It was announced that Dakota Fanning joined The Equalizer 3 cast, but the role she will play has not been revealed. The excitement that came from Dakota Fanning’s casting stemmed from her past work with Denzel in 2004’s Man on Fire, one of Tony Scott’s best movies. It was in that film that Denzel’s character was hired to be a bodyguard for Dakota’s character, allowing them to form a strong relationship. Despite their great on-screen chemistry, Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning never worked together again.
Production is currently underway on The Equalizer 3, and Sony released photos of the cast and crew together to commemorate the start of filming. This included several photos of Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning reunited 18 years after Man on Fire‘s release. They are joined by director Antoine Fuqua and new co-star Gaia Scodellaro in a few photos as well.
Equalizer 3 Is The Perfect Man on Fire Reunion
Since Man on Fire‘s ending left no room for more stories and collaborations for Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning, The Equalizer 3 serves as a perfect place to bring the two actors back together. The Equalizer franchise is built around Denzel’s Robert McCall helping younger people in trouble, as Chloë Grace Moretz and Ashton Sanders filled that spot in the first two movies. It is now possible that Equalizer 3 will use its Man on Fire reunion casting to once again put Denzel Washington in a position to protect and save Dakota Fanning’s character.
Now that Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington are reunited for The Equalizer 3, it should be fun to see what other similarities the movie ultimately has to Man on Fire. If the plan is for The Equalizer 3 to be the end of the franchise, audiences could even potentially see a Denzel Washington character die saving Dakota Johnson’s character. Of course, there will also be plenty of differences, especially as nearly two decades have passed since they last shared the screen.
