The Vampire Diaries might be over, but Damon Salvatore is always a hot topic among the fans. Some hate him, and some love him, but it’s undeniable that his character is among the ones that get the most traction when discussing the show.

10/10 Jeremy Gilbert
Jeremy and Damon’s relationship went from antagonistic to friendly and vice-versa all the time. However, in time, they managed to bond over their similarities. Damon began to see Jeremy almost as a younger brother, and from later episodes, it’s clear that Jeremy does respect Damon and even cares about him.
Eventually, they become family when Damon marries Elena; however, it’s clear that Jeremy’s loyalties will always lie with Elena first. Despite that, Damon seems to be pretty protective of Jeremy and even supports for him to have a life away from the supernatural.
9/10 Meredith Fell
Meredith and Damon didn’t start their friendship on a high note (which seems to be a trend with Damon’s friendships). However, after Meredith refuses to be intimidated by Damon, they became friends, and she became a much-needed voice of reason in Alaric’s absence.
Meredith often gave Damon advice about his relationship with his brother, Elena, and advised him to visit Alaric and spend his last moments with him. She even comes to his rescue when he has an arrow bomb strapped to his chest. While she might have only had a minor role, she still had a major impact on the older Salvatore brother’s life.
8/10 Enzo St. John
Enzo and Damon became friends when they had very little else to care about, and it seems that their friendship was the thing that got them through the worst torture by Augustine society. Damon even had to turn off his humanity after he was forced to leave Enzo behind to save himself.
They eventually rekindle their friendship and Enzo was part of the group that tried to free Damon from the prison world he was trapped in, proving himself as a good friend. He also helped Damon to fight against the Sirens, which was arguably one of the worst storylines on the show. When Stefan eventually kills Enzo in season 8, Damon is saddened by his death, which goes to show how much he cared about him.
7/10 Caroline Forbes
Many people might disagree, but by the time The Vampire Diaries ended, Caroline and Damon had one of the strongest friendships on the show. Despite him doing some unspeakable things to Caroline, she self-admittedly forgave everything after her mother died. He was the only other person Liz was close to and they bonded over their grief and missing her.
She even goes as far as enduring a tremendous amount of torture in season 8 while being in Damon’s subconscious to try and help him (which makes her a loyal friend and an ally). The two even become an unlikely family when Caroline eventually marries Stefan.
6/10 Liz Forbes
Caroline’s mother was an unlikely friend for Damon. And yet, after Caroline was turned into a vampire, he tried to help Liz get to terms with it. In a justifiable villain moment, he kidnapped her and, thus, helped reunite the mother-and-daughter duo. They often joke and use sarcasm because they are very similar in trying to hide emotions and appear strong, but Liz does refer to him as one of her best friends.
As a sheriff, Liz covers up many things for Damon and even jokes that him being the perp in half of her open cases makes her a terrible sheriff. After her death, Damon is visibly distraught and doesn’t forget his friend – even years after her death – as he brings her up when Caroline is getting married to Stefan in season 8.
5/10 Rose
Despite Damon and Rose having a physical relationship as well, they were first and foremost friends. Rose acknowledged his love for Elena, so she was aware he couldn’t have a romantic relationship with her. However, she did prove to be a loyal friend to him and she immediately called him to inform him of Elena’s intent to sacrifice herself.
She also risked her life by providing him with information about Klaus and how to kill him. But the ultimate show of loyalty was when Rose jumped in front of Damon and took a werewolf bite that was meant for him. It was what killed her a few episodes later, causing Damon to grieve for the loss of his friend. One of the best choices Damon made was giving Rose a peaceful and happy ending when she was dying.
4/10 Alaric Saltzman
Damon’s friendship with Alaric was one of the best on the show and survived even the strongest opponent – death. Despite Alaric thinking Damon killed his wife at first, it turned out to be false, and they bonded over fighting villains together and enjoying bourbon together.
They have a very humorous friendship and are often seen taunting each other. Their bond is very close to that of brothers, and Alaric even says to Damon in season 8 that he’s the closest thing he has to a brother. It’s been proven that they would do pretty much anything for each other, which is likely why Damon considers him to be another brother.
3/10 Elena Gilbert
While Elena was the primary romantic interest for Damon, fans first enjoyed their friendship (and it was a good one). Elena often opted to see the best in Damon, even if he didn’t always deserve it, and offered compassion and understanding when many people did not.
Elena was also one of the first people to actually forgive Damon for his messed-up actions after seeing just how deep his pain was. She always tried to keep him from messing up, and genuinely made him a better person even before they were together.
2/10 Stefan Salvatore
After Damon follows Stefan to Mystic Falls to continue his revenge against him, their relationship begins to mend slowly but consistently over the episodes. Their friendship was tainted by Katherine first and later Elena since they had a habit of falling for the same women. But, ultimately, they overcame that and realized their brotherly bond was more important.
They have proven over and over that they are willing to die for each other. Not only does Damon sacrifice himself to save Stefan in season 5 but Stefan does the same at the end of season 8, ultimately dying so that his brother can live. Saving his brother was one of the best decisions Stefan ever made.
1/10 Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie and Damon did not start their relationship on the best terms, and they would be considered enemies at the show’s beginning. However, in the most shocking turn of events, they became friends, first because they were forced to work together because of the friends they had in common, but also being forced to spend time together in the prison world.
And Bonnie might have been the most loyal friend to Damon because once she saw the layers he always worked so hard to keep hidden, she always seemed to have his best interest at heart.
