A behind the scenes photo from The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero teases a terrifying, skeleton-like Walker set to appear in the Daryl Dixon spinoff show. The Walking Dead is no stranger to producing horrifyingly memorable Walkers that enhance the horror elements of the zombie franchise. Memorable standouts include the bloated, wrinkly well Walker from season 2, episode 4, and Penny, the Governor’s daughter that was kept chained up by her grieving father in the first half of season 3. While many Walking Dead zombies have behaved the same way despite different looks or plot relevancy, the series has started to liven things up for the living dead by introducing variant Walkers into the show.
The Walking Dead season 11, episode 19 saw Aaron, Jerry, Lydia, and Elijah hunker down at an abandoned renaissance fair on their way to Oceanside after Jerry injured his knee. That night, the group is attacked by a herd of Walkers, led by a zombie who showcases extraordinary abilities like climbing ladders and picking up rocks to use as weapons. The zombie was lively enough to make Aaron think it was a Whisperer, which was proven wrong once he ripped the skin off its face, revealing a blood-red skull. The Walker’s intelligence harkens back to similar Walking Dead zombie behaviors in season 1, while also setting up a terrifying new world for the franchise’s future spinoffs, one where variant Walkers now pose a threat.
In an Instagram post, Greg Nicotero teases a terrifying new Walking Dead zombie set to appear in the franchise’s Daryl Dixon spinoff series. The burned, skeletal zombie appears to be dead, but as any Walking Dead fan knows, sometimes a Walker’s looks can be deceiving. Check out the horrifying Walker design above.
TWD’s Walkers Are Changing For Daryl Dixon
Nicotero’s teaser for a new type of Walker in the upcoming Daryl Dixon coincides with everything fans know about the zombie virus and how it’s impacted France. Spinoff series The Walking Dead: World Beyond ended by revealing survivors in France are dealing with Walker variants that are faster and more aggressive than those found in the United States. With Daryl going to France against his will, he’ll more than likely encounter some of these dangerous variants as he fights for his survival. In doing so, he’ll most likely come across the terrifying zombie shown above, which has a chance of being one of France’s aggressive variants.
While The Walking Dead will be branching off into spinoff shows next year, Nicotero’s post shows the horror of the show’s zombies isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If the image is anything to go by, it could mean that Walkers in France will have the most decayed look of any zombie seen on the show. Even if this Walker is just a one-off, its skeletal design coupled with its charred surface shows just how far The Walking Dead‘s spinoffs will go to encapsulate new feelings of terror for the franchise’s zombies.
