In the midst of the famous 1996 Marvel Vs. DC Comics event the Amalgam Universe was created, an alternate reality where classic Marvel and DC characters were fused together, and one beloved X-Men character surprisingly became the new Robin to Amalgam’s version of Batman, a man called Dark Claw.
The Amalgam Universe was formed after a fight between “The Brothers” (living embodiments of Marvel and DC Comics) which led to the DC Vs. Marvel event, pairing off beloved heroes from both worlds in one-on-one matches, with Marvel officially winning the most fights by the end of the battle. However, to save the DC Universe from destruction because of their loss, the Spectre and Living Tribunal decided to merge the two realities into the Amalgam Universe, which was only undone by the new character Access, the only character to be owned by both DC Comics and Marvel.
One of the most iconic mergers between DC and Marvel Comics heroes was the creation of Dark Claw, the Amalgam form of Batman and Wolverine, and of course no Batman variant can operate without a Robin by his side! Amalgam Universe’s version of Robin was named “Sparrow,” who was actually the “metamutant” Jubilation Lee, who used her mutant powers of light generation to save Dark Claw before he took her under his wing. What makes Jubilee of the X-Men becoming a new Robin so funny is that during the Marvel Vs. DC event Robin and Jubilee actually developed a surprising and sweet teenage romance with each other. Jubilation and Tim Drake’s adorable but ultimately doomed young romance, with the pair kissing on page several times, ended after Robin beat Jubilee in one-on-one battle, while of course treating her with respect and admiration. Their romantic match was truly perfect (and hilarious) on paper, with Jubilee being hot-headed and quick to use her abilities and Robin being cool-headed and calm under pressure. Although canonically the Amalgam character of Sparrow was a merger between Jubilee and DC’s Carrie Kelley, it was these attributes of the characters that also led to them becoming an ideal sidekick for the Amalgam’s Dark Claw.
Jubilee & Robin’s Short-Lived Romance Led Right Into Sparrow’s Debut
In the Amalgam Universe Jubilation Lee, who debuted in Legends of the Dark Claw #1 by Larry Hama and Jim Balent, was a young metamutant who was being hunted by that universe’s version of Sentinel robots. When Jubilation became trapped in a mall in New Gotham, she stumbled upon a Dark Claw caught in a villain’s trip and helped him escape with his life. While it is obvious that any version of Batman needs a Robin, it is also true that Wolverine is famous for becoming a surrogate father to young women and training them. Logan’s second “adopted” sidekick in Marvel Comics after Kitty Pryde was Jubilee, making her the truly perfect character to team up with Amalgam’s Logan Wayne. After taking Jubilee under his wing, and naming her Sparrow (she initially wanted to be called “Death Urge Overdrive”), he trained her in all the classic detective and fighting skills that Batman’s various Robins have become known for. Ultimately Sparrow was an integral part of Dark Claw’s survival at the hands of Lady Talia, the merged villain of Talia al Ghul and Lady Deathstrike. Funnily enough, Sparrow is not the only Robin merger to exist in the Amalgam Universe, since in the sequel series there was the character Red Wing, an Amalgam version of Tim Drake’s Robin and the X-Men’s Angel.
Although Sparrow’s existence in comics may have been short-lived, it was truly a blast seeing the bombastic, “too cool for school” Jubilee operating as Dark Claw’s very own Robin in the Amalgam Universe, and even though Sparrow was a merger between the X-Men’s Jubilee and DC’s Carrie Kelley, the amalgam was clearly inspired by Jubilation and Tim’s brief but passionate young love.
