Invader Zim is an animated science fiction cartoon originally aired on the kids channel Nickelodeon at the turn of the century. Invader Zim was a stark departure compared to the other shows being aired on Nickelodeon at the time, shows like Rugrats and SpogeBob SquarePants where unapologetically up-beat and although there was sometimes quarreling between characters, there was always an air of lightheartedness even when Plankton failed miserably at steeling Mr. Krabs secret recipe for the millionth time. Invader Zim stood out against these shows due to the dark and mean spirited nature of the characters involved, considering the plot of the story is sci-fi inspired imperialism, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Zim, who is voiced by Richard Steven Hortiz, is somewhat of an outcast after being punished into exile during the empire’s first invasion of his home planet Irk. The Empire’s imperialistic goal is to overthrow the universe and to install a social hierarchy based solely on ones physical height, since Zim is rather small it puts him at odds with the empire’s discriminatory plans.
Watch Invader Zim On Paramount+Zim himself is not without criticism and although being the main character, he isn’t the easiest character to appreciate, he displays narcissistic tendencies and to say he is a megalomaniac is not an overstatement. This departure from the happy-go-lucky protagonist was a stark departure for children’s cartoons of the time, and has remained quite unique since it’s inception in 2001. Nickelodeon perhaps shouldn’t have seen this as too much of a surprise considering the creator, Jhonen Vasquez was author and creator of renowned comic, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, of which the title should tell you everything you need to know.
Although, the show was praised for its genre bending, boundary pushing storyline and state-of-the-art blend of 2D and 3D animation, Nickelodeon canceled the show 27 episodes into the series, 13 short of the intended 40 episodes. There have been rumors as to why the show was canceled, including it being inappropriate for the children’s channel, however, Richard Horvirz, the voice of Zim stated in 2018 that the reason was rather simple, ‘We had horrible ratings’. That was maybe true, but Invader Zim rather quickly gained a cult following which is very much still alive today.
