Rangers in Dungeons & Dragons don’t always get the love they deserve. Often seen as one of the weaker classes, players can help their Rangers by giving them the best armor and equipment to make them impressive ranged damage dealers, but they are still often overlooked. Despite that, they can be a fun class to play and have some great nature-based abilities akin to Druids.
Rangers can wear both medium and light armor in Dungeons & Dragons as well as use shields, although with most Rangers choosing to use archery, few actually carry a shield. Once a player has finished creating their Ranger and chosen from the many Ranger subclasses available for DnD 5e, they can set off on an adventure, but it’s important for this class to be properly equipped to avoid taking too much damage. There are lots of great armor to choose from, and knowing which is the best suited to a Ranger character will help the party’s wilderness scouts.
# 5 Mizzium Armor With The Bracers Of Archery Is One Of The Most Useful Combinations
Mizzium Armor is a great place to start, as it has many different medium armor options for Rangers to choose from. The best choice is the breastplate which will give the Ranger an AC of 14 plus their Dexterity modifier, to a maximum of two, with no disadvantage to Stealth. As Rangers tend to have Dexterity as their highest ability score, that should provide an excellent AC boost to keep any Ranger in the fight.
Mizzium Armor is also fantastic, as it has two great effects that are useful for any customized Dungeons & Dragons class or race combo. Firstly Mizzium Armor can cancel critical hits against the wearer reducing the hit to regular damage. When hit by a magic effect that requires the Ranger to make a Strength or Constitution save, the armor also lets the player take no damage on a success instead of half. Teaming the Mizzium Armor up with magical equipment, such as the Bracers of Archery, which give a +2 to damage on ranged attacks, is excellent for any Ranger.
# 4 Dragon Scale Mail Teamed With Winged Boots Adds Resistance
Dragon Scale Mail is a very rare medium armor made from the scales of a dragon. Depending on the dragon scales used, the Dragon Scale Mail will have resistance to the type of damage associated with the color of that famous Dungeons & Dragons flying enemy. For example, red dragon scales would give resistance to fire, while copper dragon scales would give resistance to acid damage.
One of the best features of the Dragon Scale Mail is that it would give the Ranger advantage on saving throws against the breath weapons and the Frightful Presence ability of dragons. While the Dragon Scale Mail only gives a +1 to AC and imposes a disadvantage to Stealth, it also gives the Ranger the ability to locate the closest dragon that matches the armor within 30 miles. This is perfect if the player has not chosen dragons as the Ranger’s Favored Enemy.
The Dragon Scale Mail works well with the Winged Boots to give the character a boost to their movement to avoid dragons giving Rangers an advantage in DnD settings like Dragonlance. The Winged Boots allow the Ranger to have a flying speed equal to their walking speed. The boots can also be used to fly for up to four hours, either all at once or in shorter bursts. Handy for getting out of the way of a dragon breath attack or tail strike.
# 3 Mithral Half Plate Combined With The Cloak And Boots Of Elvenkind Offers Stealth And Speed
Rangers in Dungeons & Dragons need to be fast on their feet and quiet in the wilderness where they typically find themselves. Mithral Half Plate is great for this as this rare medium armor removed the disadvantage usually associated with half-plate armor. Mithral Half plate gives a +1 to AC, and when used alongside the Cloak and Boots of Elvenkind, a Ranger can truly move unseen, turning them into a much-needed Rogue-style Stealth class for DnD.
The Boots of Elvenkind mean that the Ranger will make no sound as they move, giving the player an advantage on Stealth checks that rely on silent movement. The Cloak of Elvenkind adds disadvantage to Perception checks on the Ranger while granting the Ranger advantage on Stealth checks to hide, as the cloak acts as camouflage. These three, used together, will create a stealthy Ranger capable of scouting ahead for the party.
# 2 The Last Stand Armor Alongside Nature’s Mantle Helps In Deadly Situations
The Last Stand Armor is a versatile armor found in the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount that comes in light, medium, or heavy. In Dungeons & Dragons, Rangers can choose any of the light or medium options, but studded leather is a good choice as it gives an AC of 12 plus their Dexterity modifier, with no maximum and no penalty to Stealth. While no DnD player wishes for a character’s death, the Last Stand Armor has an enchantment that only activates if the wearer dies while wearing it.
If the Ranger dies, then all celestial, fey, and fiends within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw or be banished back to its home plane of existence. The Last Stand Armor comes into its own in hopeless situations, so to make sure the Ranger does not go down, pairing it with the Nature’s Mantle is a good idea. The Nature’s Mantle is a cloak that can only be used by Druids and Rangers and allows them to hide as a bonus action, even if in plain sight.
# 1 Critical Role’s Hide Of The Feral Guardian Is The Best For Rangers
Found in the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, the Hide of the Feral Guardian is one of the fabled Vestiges of Divergence created by Matt Mercer for Critical Role’s first DnD campaign. This gift from the Wild Mother has three states: dormant, awakened, and exalted. Each state gives increasing boosts to AC and allows the Ranger to cast polymorph to transform into a specific animal.
Even in its lowest state of dormant, the Hide of the Feral Guardian is impressive. While it grants a +1 to AC, the wearer can also polymorph into a giant owl but still retain their mental stats the same as a Druid’s wild shape. In its exalted state, this detailed leather armor gives a +3 to AC, and the polymorph changes to a guardian wolf.
This powerful armor works well with the Boots of Speed that double the characters walking speed and impose disadvantage on any attacks of opportunity made against the Ranger. As the boots only require a bonus action to activate, they can be used in the same round as the Hide’s powerful DnD polymorph spell. By combining armors and items that work well together, Rangers can enhance their skills and become one of the most versatile members of a Dungeons & Dragons party.
