Between killing dark wizards and exploring the secrets of the castle, Hogwarts Legacy has created a truly magical experience, and so it’s no wonder that some players may be looking to pick up a similar game after finishing the Harry Potter prequel. Luckily, there are quite a few open-world RPGs which feature some form of magic or spell-casting for diehard witches and wizards, but a select few stand out as the best of the bunch.

If players are specifically looking for another adventure set in the universe of Harry Potter, there are numerous movie spin-off games that could satisfy their cravings. These titles might not provide as expansive of an experience, but they’ll assuredly feature that same wizarding world magic. In fact, Hogwarts Legacy (unsuccessfully) borrowed inspiration from movie tie-in predecessors and beyond, which speak to their credibility. However, those seeking the freedom that Portkey Games’ latest title offers alongside a sprinkle of magic might want to look into the following games, instead.

10 RuneScape Is A Classic MMORPG With Spellcasting

Although it might not be as flashy as Hogwarts Legacy or other games, RuneScape features an extensive magic system. Whether a player opts to use runes or a magic weapon like a staff, they’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of spells – ranging from elementals like fire and water, to more obscure types, such as blood or chaos magic.

Regardless of if they opt to play the newer RuneScape 3 or Old SchoolRuneScape, they’ll find that magic is one of the most versatile and satisfying elements of the game, which can be useful both in and outside of combat settings.

9 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s DLC Has Magic Elements

While Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t feature much magic on its own, the expansion Dawn of Ragnarök imbues Odin with several powers which belong to Norse gods. Using Hugr-Rip, the player will obtain a variety of such magical abilities, which prove both useful and fun to use in combat.

For those adamant on playing a spell-centric game like Hogwarts Legacy, it probably isn’t worth buying Assassin’s Creed Valhalla solely for this purpose, but those who already own the open-world game might want to look to the Dawn of Ragnarök DLC for a twist of the supernatural in their gameplay.

Like RuneScape, The Elder Scrolls Online is another MMORPG that contains all types of magical abilities for mages to experiment with. In fact, the Sorcerer class is extremely powerful and benefits from a glass cannon build, and so with the right equipment, players will start to feel like they’ve chosen the dark wizard path in Hogwarts Legacy before long.

The Elder Scrolls universe as a whole is ripe with in-game history and lore, and so those who enjoy the complexity of Harry Potter‘s world may find themselves slipping down a similar rabbit hole in this franchise. Plus, ESO allows sorcerers to play alongside their friends and against other players – a feature which Hogwarts Legacy is missing.

7 Dragon Age: Inquisition Lets Players Become Mages

With the Dungeons and Dragons origins of Dragon Age: Inquisition, it’s no surprise that this fantasy RPG boasts a detailed magic system. Although Hogwarts Legacy features the four Houses, this title provides a slightly more complex experience, in that it allows players to choose between three distinct Mage classes with unique abilities.

There are plenty of spells for witches and wizards to experiment with, and determining a suitable playstyle is an enjoyable part of the adventure. But whether they choose to play as a Knight-Enchanter, Rift Mage, or Necromancer, Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s best Mage builds each harness the power of the arcane arts in a satisfying way.

6 Fable 3 Features Powerful Spell Combinations

In Fable 3, players trade their wands in for Will Gauntlets: magical bracers that allow the player to cast spells using nothing but their own limbs. While the game doesn’t feature nearly as many spells as the Harry Potter universe does, it finds its footing in the several spell combinations that players can use to defeat their opposition on the fantastical continent of Albion.

Fable 3 is a game like Hogwarts Legacy in more ways than it’s not, but being able to dual-wield elements like fire and shock may win some points in the hearts of wizarding world enthusiasts. Those who enjoy it will also have the upcoming Fable 4 to look forward to.

The Mages Guild in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is quite similar to Hogwarts Legacy‘s own eponymous school, sending players on a slow-burning, overarching journey to master the arcane arts. While it’s arguable that Morrowind has the best Elder Scrolls spell system, the story-driven nature of Oblivion‘s Mages Guild ultimately offers the most meaningful experience, and it parallels Hogwarts Legacy‘s own main quest line.

Sorcerers will need to climb the ranks as an Associate of the Mages Guild in order to become an Arch-Mage in Oblivion, and along the way, they’ll have the pleasure of learning a wide range of magics, from the restorative powers of Restoration to the chaotic Destruction spells.

4 The Legend Of Zelda: BOTW Is A Fantastical Open-World Game

Although The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn’t allow players to cast spells per se, the experience in and of itself is a magical fantasy adventure, and it makes for a game that Hogwarts Legacy players will almost certainly enjoy. The kingdom of Hyrule is a gorgeous, open-world map full of secrets that’s just as exciting to explore as the Scottish Highlands in the Harry Potter prequel.

Since Hogwarts Legacy‘s release date for Nintendo Switch was delayed substantially, those who are still waiting to dive into the wizarding world (or those who may otherwise want a substitute for it) might find what they’re yearning for with Breath of the Wild.

3 Elden Ring Is A Sprawling RPG With Magical Possibilities

A Tarnished wielding two melee weapons and running towards a giant.

Elden Ring certainly doesn’t come without a challenge, as through and through, it’s a Soulsborne with difficult bosses. But even though a magic-wielding Tarnished might not feel as powerful as Hogwarts Legacy‘s protagonist initially, it’s well worth the trials and tribulations to master the arcane arts in the Lands Between.

Not only are sorcerers among the most powerful classes in the game, they’re also woven deeply into the game’s complex and fascinating lore. Players will truly feel like a part of something larger, and in this way, Elden Ring can be quite like Hogwarts Legacy itself.

2 The Witcher 3 Gives Players A Taste Of Spellcasting

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – especially after the impactful changes of The Witcher 3‘s next-gen update – is one of the most critically-acclaimed RPGs of all time. Just based on its immense, detailed open-world map and the impact of player choices on the story, anyone who enjoys Hogwarts Legacy will also likely find themselves entranced by the adventures of the Witcher Geralt and his sorceress friends.

Combat in The Witcher 3 also incorporates just the right amount of magic in between swordsmanship. Players can cast a handful of powerful Signs, and they can also brew a large list of potions and alchemic concoctions that make Hogwarts Legacy‘s limited selection quite apparent by comparison.

1 Skyrim Is A Great Open-World RPG With Magic

However, the best game like Hogwarts Legacy is The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. This beloved RPG has withstood the test of time, and any witch or wizard who has yet to play the game should not hesitate in giving it a go (or replay it all over again). Wielding the best magic spells in Skyrim will require that the Dragonborn join the College of Winterhold, but after completing that quest line, players will be free to wreak havoc in any way they see fit among the beautiful mountains and expansive plains of the Nords’ homeland.

Even after completing the game, Skyrim‘s modding community has created no shortage of mods that bring even the most outlandish of arcane possibilities to fruition. From overpowered versions of previous Elder Scrolls spells, to magical abilities from completely separate franchises (including Harry Potter), Skyrim is the best game like Hogwarts Legacy.
