The Zorro Disney+ series starring That ’70s Show’s Wilmer Valderrama is moving forward with a Game of Thrones writer as its showrunner.
The Zorro series has officially found its showrunner. The masked vigilante character created by Johnston McCulley has been adapted to the screen numerous times dating back to 1920, but most recently in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas. In late 2021, it was reported that Disney+ was developing a new Zorro series starring That ’70s Show alum Wilmer Valderrama.
Now, over a year after Valderrama signed on, the Disney+ project has taken another major step forward by finding its showrunner. Deadline reports that Game of Thrones writer and executive producer Bryan Cogman has signed on as a writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Cogman joins Valderrama on the Zorro series who is also acting as an executive producer in addition to starring.

Known under the working title Zorro, the upcoming Disney+ series will follow Valderrama as the privileged caballero Diego de la Vega who, after tragedy befalls his family, returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles. There, he discovers a culture of unfettered corruption and injustice that ultimately motivates him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro, who is arguably America’s first true superhero. The upcoming reboot is expected to be a boldly modern reimagination of Disney’s classic Zorro series that aired on ABC during the late 1950s.
Bringing Cogman on board as showrunner is a promising sign for the new Zorro series. He previously served as an instrumental writer on Game on Thrones, penning a total of 11 episodes and winning four Emmy Awards during his tenure on HBO’s massively successful show, and will now bring this same caliber of writing and creative oversight to the Zorro series as showrunner. After Game of Thrones, Cogman took his talents to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 as a consulting producer and is also no stranger to Disney, as he is also writing The Sword in the Stone live-action remake.
