Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish will end with season 6, one year after the original series’ conclusion. Since its 2018 debut, Grown-ish has followed characters who originated on Black-ish along with some new to the franchise. While Grown-ish‘s first four seasons focused on Yara Shahidi’s Zoe, season 5, which concluded on March 15, shifted focus to Zoe’s younger brother, Junior (Marcus Scribner). The series was renewed for season 6 in January.
Now, Freeform has posted a video with Shahidi revealing that Grown-ish season 6 will be the show’s last. Shahidi states that the final season will air in two parts, with the first coming in Summer 2023 and the second in 2024. The show’s star hypes the upcoming 100th episode as well as guest stars Lil Yachty and Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals. Shahidi also teases season 6 will feature “some other exciting people that we’ll share soon.” Check out the Grown-ish video below:
What Grown-ish Ending Means For The Black-ish Universe
While Grown-ish ending is sad in its own right, perhaps more notably it means the conclusion of the Black-ish franchise for the time being. Since the original show premiered in 2014, it’s been a major tent-pole for Disney and its networks, bringing in strong viewership and critical acclaim. In addition to Grown-ish, Black-ish also produced the prequel series Mixed-ish, which ran for two seasons, and the concept for another show, Old-ish, though ultimately that project didn’t come to fruition.
Grown-ish ending means not only saying goodbye to characters introduced on that series but also to the entire Black-ish world. This is no small thing with many viewers accustomed to having at least one of the franchise’s shows on air for nearly a decade. While the Black-ish series finale provided a satisfying conclusion for many of the characters, it is heartening to hear Shahidi tease other “exciting“ guest stars, which could very well include people from Black-ish.
In that way, Grown-ish‘s season 6 finale could serve as a farewell to the franchise as a whole, offering another opportunity to celebrate the pivotal series of shows. Luckily, viewers have plenty of time to come to terms with the Black-ish universe ending before Grown-ish concludes in 2024.
