The Masked Singer season 9’s Mantis became the last save of the season on WB Movie Night, and there are many clues to his identity. Panelist Robin Thicke saved Mantis with the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell, which means that he will compete against Medusa and Gargoyle in a special save round. Mantis had sung “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger earlier in the episode. After Doll was unmasked, he went head-to-head with Dandelion in the Battle Royale, during which they sang “(I’ve Got A) Golden Ticket” from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

The Masked Singer season 9 panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg noted that Mantis’ two performances sounded markedly different. During “Old Time Rock and Roll,” Mantis was much more “rock” than when he sang, “(I’ve Got A) Golden Ticket).” In the latter song, Mantis sounded more like a Broadway star. As Mantis prepares for the next round of the competition, against the other two saves, fans can piece together his clues in order, and guess who is behind his mask.

The Masked Singer’s Mantis Shows A New Side Of Himself

The Masked Singer‘s Mantis’ clue package begins with him dancing in front of motorcycles. A voiceover that sounds like a film preview’s narrator then says, “In a world where celebrities dress up in elaborate costumes and sing their hearts out, one gentlemantis is answering the call.” Mantis then answers a cell phone, saying, “I’m in.” He is shown scaling the side of a building, while breaking windows on the way up. The voice-over continues, “And is ready to show you a new side of himself.” Mantis is then shown hanging from a rope from a flying helicopter.

The Masked Singer’s Mantis Is Good At Comedy

The voice-over goes on to say, “Flying onto the Masked Singer stage, comes a performer known for his brooding persona, who’s ready to show you he’s real freaking good at comedy. He’s almost won an Emmy for it.” He walks by with an acoustic guitar, and pushes one of the Men in Black as he passes by him.

Music Has Always “Followed” The Masked Singer’s Mantis’ Life

The Masked Singer clue package continues with the narrator saying, “The Gentleman turns to The Gentlemantis.” Mantis is shown reading a book titled, Lord of the Fly. The voice-over then states,“You may not know the Mantis as a singer. He’s a published author. He’s done Shakespeare.” Mantis is then shown holding Yorick’s skull from Hamlet. Next, Mantis holds a plush wolf toy that howls. The voice-over announces, “And now he wants to let loose and dance with the wolves. Music has followed Mantis his whole career, from Broadway to the silver screen.”

Mantis is then shown at a poker game with the Masked Singer Men in Black. The scene zooms in on one of the Man in Black’s brown cowboy boots, as he pulls a card out of it.The voice-over says, “So get ready for some insect insanity.” A gasoline container then appears on its side, as the narrator says, “‘Cause this bug’s coming to the stage. Right. Now.” As the camera zooms in on matches, the warehouse where the poker game is being played blows up, while Mantis walks out of it.

The Masked Singer’s Mantis Has A Special Clue

After Mantis’ performance, one more clue about his identity was revealed. It was black sunglasses with a tag that said, “True Story.” Mantis explained, “Representing a legend was instrumental to my success. And it was an honor to do so.”

The Masked Singer Panelists Shared Their Guesses For Mantis

Robin began the Masked Singer panelists’ guesses by saying that he was thinking that Mantis could be a big movie star because it was WB Movie Night. Although he is not well-known for comedy, Robin thought Mantis might be actor Dennis Quaid, because he is funny. He also played singer Jerry Lee Lewis in the film, Great Balls of Fire!. Ken Jeong’s guess for Mantis was Bruce Springsteen, because his look reminded him of the singer, and he had a bandana, just like Bruce. Nicole noted the acoustic guitar, and guessed that Mantis might be an actor and musician. She wondered if he was Keanu Reeves.

Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought Mantis might be Cole Hauser from Yellowstone, but Robin pointed out that Cole doesn’t dance like that. Jenny also used the clue, “let loose” to come up with actor and singer Kevin Bacon, who starred in the movie, Footloose. She added that Kevin also has a band, The Bacon Brothers, as well as a great sense of humor.

Whoever Mantis turns out to be, he’s a fun contestant. As he danced around host Nick Cannon, he made everyone laugh. He seems to have a great sense of humor, which would match his comedy clue. Although his identity remains a mystery for the time-being, Mantis is definitely one of the best singers so far this season. He faces tough competition in the save round from Medusa and Gargoyle. However, when it comes to winning, this Mantis definitely has a prayer.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on FOX.
