Prime Video’s newest limited series, Dead Ringers, is based on David Cronenberg’s 1988 film of the same name about twin gynecologists who push the boundaries of ethics in their personal and professional lives. To update it over three decades later, Rachel Weisz takes over the dual role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle from Jeremy Irons. The Mantle twins are now fertility doctors, and they are looking for funding for a cutting-edge clinic.
Enter Emily Meade’s Susan and Jennifer Ehle’s Rebecca. They have the funding the Mantle twins desperately need and, as the twins court them, things naturally get a little out of hand.
Screen Rant sat down with Meade and Ehle ahead of the premiere of Dead Ringers to discuss the show, including filming that episode 2 sequence, what they would do if they had an identical twin, and more.
Jennifer Ehle & Emily Meade on Dead Ringers
Screen Rant: If you guys had an identical twin, what would be the first thing that you would do with them?
Jennifer Ehle: Gosh, I never realized I wanted an identical twin until you said [that].
Emily Meade: I grew up with like Full House and the Olsen twins. So I feel like twins [were] really exciting in the 90s. I mean, the first thing we do is be born. I remember me and my friend when we were kids, we were not twins, nor were we related. And we didn’t actually look alike. But we would like to tell people we were twins. And we would switch…there’d be little outfits that were a matching tank top and shorts. And we would switch the shirt and shorts, and then we would tell people we were twins, but we looked different because we were born an hour apart. So that’s why we actually did that a lot. I could have worked with being an actual twin and something like that in a better way. Because we’d be twins.
Jennifer Ehle: Yeah, that’s interesting. I don’t know.
It’s an interesting philosophical question.
Jennifer Ehle: I think it would be great. What I think [it] would be wonderful to be a twin, to have a relationship like that your whole life, right from the very beginning. To have that intimacy, and that closeness must be absolutely extraordinary.
Emily Meade: Yeah. I imagined there’d be some competition, too. That’s something I’ve always thought about. Maybe I’m just a really competitive person. But I feel like I’d be like, think about it… If you like a guy, you’re right to be like, are they going to like my twin more? That’s the first place my mind goes. Maybe says more about me…
Jennifer, were you familiar with Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers before you signed on to the project?
Jennifer Ehle: I saw it when I was 18, when it first came out and I haven’t seen it since. I loved it. This was, for me, all about Alice Birch and Rachel Weisz and the idea of working with either one of those people was extraordinary. And to work with them together. The fact that they were reimagining such an extraordinary film was just even more fun.
Emily, episode 2 was one of my favorites. Both of you feature prominently in that one, but the Mantle sisters courting you guys, Rebecca, and the board. So what was it like to get the whole cast together and have this chaotic environment a little bit? What was it like to film those scenes?
Emily Meade: It was really fun and funny. It was definitely, I’d say, maybe the most fun scene. And I had a lot of downtime in the scene where I could kind of just sit and observe and do weird things with my food in the background and get to watch. Everybody in that scene was so good. There were some people who were just there for that scene and every single person was so good.
There was such a beautiful choreography, and we did it for three days, so there was more fun and nuance created. And everybody found this weird, flowing dynamic. So it’s kind of like watching an interactive play close-up. It was just as funny in person as it was on the screen, maybe more because we got to see a lot of things that didn’t wind up.
Jennifer Ehle: It was really fun.
