Creed premiered in 2015 and was strong enough to stand on its own, but it still copied some aspects of Rocky. While the films have their noticeable differences, many of the same principles and storylines are featured in Rocky and in Creed.
5 Rocky & Adonis Both Meet Their Future Partners
A major plot in Rocky, outside his determination to become a boxer, is his relationship with Adrian. Rocky knows Adrian because she is the sister of his friend Paulie Pennino and she works in the pet store where he frequently goes to buy supplies for his pets. At first, Adrian isn’t interested in Rocky, and her brother doesn’t approve of their relationship. However, Rocky’s able to convince Adrian to give him a chance, and soon the two form a relationship.

However, at the end of the film, Adrian attends Rocky’s boxing match, and he’s left in the ring calling for her as he loses to Apollo. The two end up marrying in Rocky II and give birth to a son. Sadly, Adrian passes away from cancer in the time between the films Rocky V and Rocky Balboa.
In Creed, Adonis gets his own love interest. Bianca is an aspiring musician who lives in the same Philadelphia building as Adonis does. When Adonis hears her blasting music, he knocks on her door to complain, but a relationship sparks instead. Bianca shares similar concerns to Adrian around Adonis’ boxing career, and the following Creed films showcase some of the issues Adonis’ career creates for his family. Adonis proposes to Bianca in Creed II, and the two get married when they find out Bianca is pregnant.
4 Rocky & Adonis Face Opposition From Others In Their Boxing Careers
The most important message in the Rocky and Creed films is the character’s belief in themselves because not everyone around them has faith in them or wants them to pursue boxing careers. Adrian makes it clear from the start that she doesn’t agree with Rocky’s career, but he also has to face doubt from people like Mickey, who kicks Rocky out of his locker at the start of the film and gives it to someone else who he deems more talented and capable of a boxing career. Luckily, Rocky doesn’t allow anyone to stop him, and Apollo soon realizes his talent and decides he wants to fight him.
In Creed, Adonis’ adoptive mother and Apollo’s wife, Maryanne Creed, doesn’t want him to fight like his father. Apollo died in the ring during Rocky IV, and Maryanne is worried that the same could happen to Adonis because boxing is a dangerous sport. There are also many instances where Bianca doesn’t want Adonis to fight because she doesn’t think the consequences of his career are worth it. This is even more prominent in the later Creed films, like Creed III where Adonis’ return to the boxing world puts a strain on his marriage with Bianca, which has a negative impact on their daughter.
3 Rocky & Adonis Train To Fight An Experienced Boxer
Despite initial discouragement, Apollo ends up specifically asking Rocky to fight him. While he knows the odds of him winning are slim, and he ultimately does lose, Rocky trains hard to fight Apollo with help from Mickey. Creed follows a very similar format. Adonis has an advantage over Rocky as he’s the son of Apollo, which everyone finds out, even though he tries hard to separate himself from his father’s legacy. Adonis meets Rocky at his restaurant, and the boxing champion agrees to train him for his fight. Like Rocky in the original film, Adonis is asked to fight a more experienced boxer named Ricky Conlan. Rocky puts him through the same intense training that he went through in the original film, pushing him to the limits but also proving to himself and the world his capabilities, which gets him known in the boxing world.

Rocky ends with an unexpected loss for the boxer. While going up against Apollo is a long shot, the film is about Rocky achieving his dreams of becoming a boxer, and winning the match against Apollo would have been the picture-perfect ending. Creed switches the story a little by having Adonis first fight another more experienced boxer named Leo “The Lion” Sporino and winning that match. This suggests, Adonis might be good enough to win against Conlan too. Another hint that he could win is that he’s Apollo’s son, and Apollo won the fight at the end of Rocky. However, Creed sticks to the Rocky format, having Adonis lose his match against Conlan in order to continue the valuable message established in Rocky.

Neither Rocky nor Adonis allows their losses to hold them back. Instead, they use them as fuel, which every successful person knows is the key to succeeding.
