Galactic Starcruiser Just Over 1 Year After Launching It

Disney’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel experience is ending, just over a year after its initial launch. Met with immediate criticism for steep prices and subpar amenities, the Star Wars hotel quickly struggled to fill up to its already low capacity. Disney reduced the amount of voyages in recent months to offset costs, but a more permanent solution to the hotel’s poor performance is coming.

Disney announced that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel will be making its last voyage September 28-30, and will then close for good. The following statement was issued on the official Disney World website:

“The final voyage for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will take place September 28-30, 2023. We are so proud of all of the Cast Members and Imagineers who brought Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to life and look forward to delivering an excellent experience for Guests during the remaining voyages over the coming months. Thank you to our Guests and fans for making this experience so special.For Guests who previously booked a voyage on or after September 30, 2023, we will be contacting you soon to discuss your options and modify your plans. As we prioritize these Guests, at this time, new bookings are temporarily paused and will reopen on May 26, 2023.”

What will become of the land where the Galactic Starcruiser resides has not been disclosed, though an expansion to Walt Disney World’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park could be an option.

Star Wars Needs A Major Rebound At Disney Parks

There’s no way to mince words – the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel was a colossal disaster from the beginning. Galactic Starcruiser promotional material was lampooned for displaying cheap, generic sci-fi settings, rather than the typical architecture of Star Wars, and the experience was criticized for the limited activities available. Above all else, cost was a major issue for prospective guests, with bookings starting at $4,800 for just a two-night stay.

With Disney eating the cost of Galactic Starcruiser, significant land will be available to expand Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios. The current Star Wars land at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World is amazing, but limited in scope due to the available space, and the unexpectedly quick closing of Galactic Starcruiser now presents the opportunity for expansion. Adding more attractions to Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios will be expensive, but Disney will be able to recoup its investment on the failed Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser by offering something more affordable for guests to visit.
