The latest stunning new image from the Ahsoka Disney+ recreates the epilogue of Star Wars Rebels. The Star Wars Rebels animated series ended in 2018, in an epic finale set some months before the events of the first Star Wars movie. Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger sacrificed himself to defeat the ruthless Imperial strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn, summoning a flock of purrgil – Star Wars‘ space whales – to spirit Thrawn’s flagship into hyperspace. An intriguing epilogue scene promised this story was far from over, though; it fast-forwarded to after the end of the Galactic Civil War, promising that former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Mandalorian artist Sabine Wren would team up on a quest to find Ezra at last.

Empire has released a new image from the upcoming Ahsoka Disney+ TV show, promising that this tantalizing epilogue will finally be addressed in live-action. The image shows Rosario Dawon’s Ahsoka and Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s Sabine recreating the scene from Star Wars Rebels‘ epilogue.

The image is accompanied by comments from Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni and Bordizzo herself, explicitly drawing the connection between the stories.

For Dave Filoni, the live-action Ahsoka Disney+ TV show is the perfect opportunity to complete the story he set it up in 2018. “Even at the time I did the Rebels epilogue, I felt like, ‘If I go forward with this, this has to be challenging in another way,’” he notes. “And the challenge was going to be live-action. I wanted to resolve these things with [Ahsoka], but I wanted to do something new with it.” It’s an ambitious approach, not least because Ahsoka will need to appeal both to viewers who are familiar with Rebels and others who are not.

For Bordizzo, the quest for Ezra Bridger lies at the heart of her character’s emotional journey in Ahsoka. “She feels an obligation to him,” she explains. “When they freed [Ezra’s homeworld] Lothal, she was given this hero status. But she doesn’t feel that she’s earned that because she lost her friend in that whole debacle. She’s just focused on the promise she made to him to find him.” The prospect of the quest for Ezra Bridger is a truly exciting one.

There is, however, one striking difference between Star Wars Rebels‘ epilogue and Empire’s new image from Ahsoka. In Rebels, Ahsoka’s clothes seemed to be shimmering, leading Filoni himself to compare her transformation to Gandalf the Gray becoming Gandalf the White in The Lord of the Rings. In the new Ahsoka image, though, Ahsoka’s robes still seem rather more gray. Still, it’s possible the shimmering effect has been added in post-production, explaining why it’s absent in this remarkable shot.
