Today a user goes on their own smartphone almost five hours a day. Beyond the apps for videos and social networks, however, it is possible that you do not know all secrets and settings that can make these hours easierif not actually decrease the time you spend on your phone.
The settings screen of Android is rich in options that allow you to use your smartphone more comfortably, increase the security of your data and allow faster connections with other devices. All of these options appear in the app Settings of the latest version of Android 13, the so-called “pure Android”, which is found for example on Google Pixel devices. Other devices, such as those from Samsung or Motorola, should still have similar functions in similar locations.
Automatically activate the wi-fi
It is possible that you turn off the wi-fi when you are away from home or at work. If this is also the case for you, know that Android is able to reactivate it for you when you return within range of a network you connected to in the past. Go up Network and internetthen on Internet And Network preferences to find the switch Activate wi-fi automatically.
Use less data
If you are overseas, with a limited data plan or in an area with intermittent cellular coverage, you can make your phone use less data by selecting Network and Internet And Data saver. This option works in several ways: some applications, for example, may check for updates less frequently, while images on the web may only load after they are touched.
Increase the security of contactless payments
Applications such as Google Pay allow you to pay by phone thanks to the magic of NFC. But this also means that anyone who picks up your phone could potentially use it to make a payment. To prevent this from happening, make sure nfc payments require the screen to be unlocked: go to Connected devices, Connection preferences, Nfc and activated Request device unlock for Nfc.
Automatically start car mode
Android has a special driving mode, which makes it easier to perform certain actions with voice commands and suppresses other notifications. This mode can be started automatically when the phone connects to the car bluetooth: to set the function, go to Connected devices, Connection preferences And Auto mode.
Set default applications
Some actions, such as opening a link or answering calls, need associated default applications. To check which apps are associated with certain activities, select App and then Default apps: you can choose an app category (such as browsers) and indicate which one to use by default. All available apps corresponding to the category you have selected will appear on the screen.
Manage apps
Apps often ask for permission to access certain data or sections of your device, such as your phone’s contacts and location. To view and possibly change these permissions, or limit access to them only when using the app, open App and select Show all apps to choose a particular application. Then tap on Authorizations to check the settings and make changes. From here you will also be able to see the last time a certain set of permissions was used.
