To access Freeform, you need to make sure you have the latest version of Apple’s operating system: therefore, depending on the device used, iOs 16.2, iPadOs 16.2 and macOs Ventura 13.1. On iPad and iPhone, you need to tap Settings > generals > Software update, where you should see the option to download the new version. On Mac instead the path to follow is System Preferences > Software update > Update now. Freeform will automatically appear on your device after the update is complete.
Once you open a new whiteboard, you will be greeted by a blank canvas. Apple defines workspace as “flexible“, which means it is possible change the size of the whiteboard whenever you want. This allows you to easily get an overview as the board gets bigger. Personally, I like the fact that you don’t have to touch the screen or scroll through multiple pages because it makes the user experience more natural.
At the top of each board are five tools. Mark up it is used to access various writing tools such as pen, pencil or marker; Sticky notes allows you to add post-it notes; Shapes instead it allows you to use a variety of different shapes, from a simple circle to animals, foods and plants. Freeform also has an icon for type the texts instead of scribbling it and a multimedia tool for easily import content from photo albums or the Files app (or to scan documents and insert web links).
In theory, the process of sharing whiteboards should be simple. Just tap the Share button within Freeform and send an invite via Apple’s Messages app or email. By sending the link to a group chat, all participants will be automatically added to the whiteboard. It will be possible to see in real time who is working within the whiteboard, with the respective icons appearing anywhere, similar to the collaboration mode on Google Docs. You can also initiate a FaceTime call directly from within a shared whiteboard.
In my experience though use Freeform it wasn’t that simple. After trying to collaborate on a whiteboard with my editor and not seeing live changes or our whiteboard icons, I noticed a message that said “Freeform requires an account security update to view active contributors“. When I tapped the message, I was prompted to create a password for the iPad to enable end-to-end encryption, not even though I already had a passcode for the iPad. Even after creating a password several times password through the Freeform app, I get error messages telling me it’s “unable to open the whiteboard“, preventing me from accessing any collaboration features. I’m still troubleshooting, and since Apple just launched the Freeform app, I haven’t been able to test it with other users yet. Chances are you won’t run into issues with the gender.
