On the morning of November 16, 2022, the Artemis I mission with the Orion capsule and the European Service Module which were launched in the direction of moon (to follow a retrograde orbit) to then return and ditch in the Pacific Ocean after a total of 25.5 days. The journey can be followed through the official page created by NASA. This is the first mission with hardware capable of returning humans to our natural satellite over the next few years. The first to actually be launched is the one with the cubesat CAPSTONE, but obviously this is not hardware designed to transport humans.

Being the first launch for the NASA SLS space rocket and the first flight (after the initial validation one) of the Orion capsule it was too risky to immediately use a human crew. For this reason, on board we find some scientific experiments and dummies that are used to detect various parameters and to ensure that when there are actually astronauts, everything can go smoothly. Among the various features of the Space Launch System there was also that of having ten cubesat within the Orion State Adapter (OSA), among them ArgoMoonrealized by Argotec on behalf of ASI and the only small European satellite selected for the mission. At the beginning of September, after the second postponement of the launch of Artemis Isome information had been released about cubesat aboard NASA SLS. Subsequently we had also investigated the matter thanks to Argotec who had kindly answered a few questions about the status of ArgoMoon. In these hours the first images taken by Cubesat after the launch have been released and many more will come in the future.

According to what is reported by the Italian company, a few minutes after the separation between the OSA and the cubesat, Argotec has acquired the signal allowing remote control of the satellite. On the evening of November 16th ArgoMoon was in stable conditions while at 00:15 on 17 November the first calibration image was captured and at 11:55 on the same day a photograph was taken at the moon. The distances were respectively 125,000 km from the Earth and 278,500 km from the Moon.

George Saccoccia (President of ASI) declared “beautiful photos of the Earth and the Moon, our next home thanks to the Artemis program! These were captured by our Cubesat Argomoon on its journey after separation from the Space Launch System, America’s great new launch vehicle, essential to bring humanity back to Moon!”. We remember that ArgoMoon And LICIA Cube they are closely related, differing substantially in the type of cameras on board. Those of ArgoMoon which were designed to resume the ICPS and the release of the Cubesats from the OSA as well as collect telemetry data during the second part of the mission.

What happened to the ten Cubesats from Artemis I? Some answers were given by Mike Sarafin (Artemis Mission Manager). We know five, inclusive ArgoMoon, are working properly. These are LunaH-Map, BioSentinel, Equuleus and Omotenashi. Those that remain instead have had a series of technical problems with one in particular (whose name has not been mentioned) which has not responded to commands. Their names are: Lunar IceCube, NEA, LunIR, CuSP and Team Miles. More details should be released over the next few hours as well as higher resolution images and video of the NASA SLS launch and Orion capsule.
