Assisted suicide, because a French youtuber asked for it

Invited on January 4, 2022 to the program Ça commence aujourd’hui (It starts today), conducted by Faustine Bollaert, Olympe had talked at length about the hell of her daily life in person with dissociative identity disorder, explaining how he lives with his alter egos. Each of them has a name: among these, Lucie the protector, Jaythe more sociable one, or even Charliebearer of his traumas. The young woman had also stated that she was often subject in mood swings or depressive states that continually bring her back to her painful past. Between interviews and videos on social media, Olympe said she was a victim of school bullying for 14 years, pedophilia, gang rape (“five rapes in adolescence”) and, as mentioned, says he also lived theabandonment of his family, going through four homes and twenty adoptive families in 7 years. “Like any human being, I have my limits. And my limits have been pushed to the extreme for years and I can’t face any more trials“, he concluded.

The opinion of the doctors

The question is certainly thorny. in 2002 theeuthanasia was decriminalized in Belgium (as in Switzerland), and then extended also to minors in 2014. In France, currently no law authorizes assisted suicide and for this Olympe has decided to turn to neighboring Belgium. The discussions, undertaken by the French ethics committee last September, could however soon to open the way to this process for adults with serious or incurable diseaseswith a life-threatening condition.

Meanwhile, Le Parisien interviewed one of the doctors who would be contacted by Olympe. “I haven’t seen his medical records yet, but I’ve read his emails – he explains to the French newspaper Yves de Locht about the young woman’s request -. Young people can resort to assisted suicide, but you need certificates or medical documents of psychiatry that attest which, despite all the care, it is impossible to cure it“the doctor points out. “It will be a long and difficult road for her – adds –. Psychiatric cases are very particular: the process can last months, maybe years”.
