ASUS has initiated an official recall for certain models of the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard. We are talking about a top of the range product for 12th gen Intel Core processors based on Intel Z690 chipset (LGA 1700) and available on the market from 2021, practically close to the launch of the Alder Lake-S platform. The confirmation comes directly from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the manufacturer has already opened a support page for users who have purchased this specific model of motherboard (link in VIA).
The reason for the recall is quite serious: we speak of a possible short circuit of a capacitor which can lead to overheating and subsequently to the melting of the components with the possibility of even a fire. In reality, this problem had already been detected on some specimens in the post-launch phase, isolating the cause in a particular capacitor installed in the wrong direction; probably over the months the reports have increased and the manufacturer has simply done what needed to be done before any accident.
Going into detail, the affected products would be about 10,000, a lot sold between October and December 2021 which, however, will be easy to identify thanks to the serial. According to what was reported, the part number in question is 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 while it is necessary to keep an eye on all the serial numbers starting with MA, MB or MC (which identify the year of production 2021). If you own a ROG Maximus Z690 Hero immediately check the serials on the dedicated page, even if you have not found the short circuit case, the problem can manifest itself differently, that is with the motherboard not starting or with the error code 53 on the debug LED .
