Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Avatar: The Way of WaterWith Avatar: The Way of Water finally releasing in theaters more than a decade after Avatar, audiences won’t have to wait as long to watch Avatar 3. Co-written and directed by James Cameron, The Way of Water introduces a number of plot threads that could carry over into Avatar 3 — here’s everything to know about the third film in the flourishing Avatar franchise, including what to expect regarding the film’s story.
Audiences have waited 13 years to finally see The Way of Water, and the Avatar sequel introduces new storylines that will be further expanded upon in Avatar 3, including the conflict between Colonel Quaritch and Jake and Neytiri’s family. Luckily, viewers won’t have to hold their breath to find out if The Way of Water was the last Pandora adventure because Avatar 3 is officially in the works, and far along in the production process.
Avatar 3 Is Confirmed: James Cameron’s Sequel Plan Explained
Avatar 3 has been confirmed for several years now, and the lengthy wait time between the first film and its follow-ups is long enough to give James Cameron and his writing team the opportunity to work out the story in advance. Cameron’s sequel plan is more thoroughly laid out in Avatar: The Way of Water, and the director says a big part of the reason he continues to make Avatar sequels is to continue working with the cast and crew.
Avatar 3 aims to also carry on the Sully family’s story, with Stephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch serving as the third film’s primary antagonist once more. Cameron’s plans for Avatar 3 are more solidified since the sequel was filmed simultaneously with Avatar: The Way of Water, with motion-capture performances for Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4 completed all the way back in 2018. What’s more, Avatar 3 is expected to explore new parts of Pandora, as well as new clans of Na’vi, branching out further than ever before.
Avatar 3 Cast: Who Will Return?
While certain characters, like Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son who was killed in battle, won’t be around for the sequel, Avatar 3 will see Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return as Jake and Neytiri, respectively. Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss — who portray Jake and Neytiri’s remaining children Kiri, Lo’ak, and Tuk, respectively — and Jack Champion as Spider will also be in Avatar 3. They will be joined by Stephen Lang as Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, and Bailey Bass as Reya, the latter three portrayed members of the Metkayina in The Way of Water. Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, and Edie Falco are also expected to return.
In addition to the returning characters, Avatar 3 will introduce a plethora of new characters. Oona Chaplin was cast to play the character Varang, who will appear in the remaining three sequels. David Thewlis will also join the film, playing an unnamed Na’vi character who will be a big part of Avatar 3 and its sequels. Rounding out the new members of the cast is Michelle Yeoh, who was last seen in the hit multiverse film Everything Everywhere All At Once, who will play scientist Dr. Karina Mogue in the third and subsequent Avatar films.
Avatar 3 Story: How The Way Of Water Sets Up A Sequel
Avatar: The Way of Water’s ending leaves a few storylines open for continuation. With Spider having rescued Colonel Quaritch from drowning, the film’s antagonist will likely continue his quest for revenge on Jake in Avatar 3. Things could get worse before they get better, especially as Quaritch’s rage will be at an all-time high following The Way of Water’s final battle. Crucially, Spider saving his dad could create tension between him and his surrogate family if they find out what he did. The conflict between the Na’vi and the RDA will surely escalate, and it’s possible the RDA will come better prepared in Avatar 3, which could pose an even bigger threat for Jake’s family.
While Quaritch’s main quarrel is with Jake, the RDA is looking to expand in Pandora and make it livable for more humans. Their colonization will devastate the planet’s native population and their land, which will likely create even more discord and animosity between the Na’vi, who have always fought to protect their people and homeland. Avatar 3 could further expand on this growing tension and its effect on Pandora’s population. There were glimpses of this in The Way of Water, with Captain Scoresby hunting the tulkun despite what they meant to the Metkayina, and Avatar 3 could delve deeper.
Avatar 3 Release Date
Avatar 3 is currently expected to arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024. The film faced a number of delays, and its release date was pushed back several times for a variety of reasons, including production shutdowns due to COVID-19. Namely, the Avatar sequel delays were attributed to James Cameron wanting to have all five scripts prepared before going into production. The delays also benefited the visual effects team, who had more time to work on the sequels. Initially, Avatar 3 was slated for release in 2015 and then scheduled for 2020. Ultimately, 20th Century Studios settled on 2024, two years after the release of its predecessor.
