Fans of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have to wait a little longer for the actor’s superhero debut, and we’re getting more insight on why that is.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam was set to be part of the summer movie season until Warner Bros. shuffled around all of its upcoming DC films earlier this year. Instead of a July premiere, Black Adam will now show on Oct. 21, which producer Hiram Garcia told TheWrap will allow more time for the post-production process to be completed:
“I think we’re just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold. Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed. Obviously all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we’re just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work,” Garcia said.
As Garcia noted, there are plenty of other films that are in the same boat as Black Adam. Disney pushed back nearly all of the 2022 and 2023 Marvel Studios releases because more work needed to be done on the back-end. That reasoning is also why fellow DC movies such as The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were moved from their 2022 release dates into 2023. Even animated superhero adventures are needing more time to be assembled, as Sony recently sent Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from October of this year to June 2, 2023.
Black Adam Finally Set to Debut on the Silver Screen
While it’s disappointing that the wait for Black Adam has gotten even longer, it’s exciting that the long-awaited film is only a few months away from its premiere. A story centered around the archrival of Shazam has been in the works for years, with Johnson trying to get the movie off the ground since the mid-2000s. The chances of getting a Black Adam film got much better upon the successful release of Shazam! in 2019, and production finally moved forward on Johnson’s first foray into the superhero world.
Not much is known about the story of Black Adam, and an official trailer has yet to be released as well. The first footage of the film was shown at the 2021 DC FanDome event, and additional shots were included when Warner Bros. teased its 2022 DC slate earlier this year. With Black Adam set to be released in a little more than four months, a full trailer should be coming down the line sometime shortly.
Along with the titular antihero, Black Adam is set to include members of the Justice Society of America, many of whom will be making their feature film debuts. Atom Smasher, Hawkman, Cyclone, and Doctor Fate will all be part of the film, which opens up some intriguing possibilities for the future of the DCEU. Not to mention the inevitability of Black Adam facing with with Shazam, and possibly the entire Shazam family. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods set to be released two months after Black Adam, that crossover may happen sooner rather than later.
Black Adam is being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, and has a cast that includes Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, and Aldis Hodge, along with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
