The final days of Congress are always perilous for taxpayers, and Democrats in Washington are still hoping to raise from the dead a mega-child tax credit before Congress leaves town for the year. An eleventh-hour deal would be a mistake for the GOP on the merits and the politics, and they merely need to do nothing to leave it buried.

Democrats have all year been aiming to pass a $3,000 tax credit for children, with a $600 bonus for younger kids, paid out in part in monthly checks. It’s essentially a guaranteed income even for those who don’t owe taxes. The credit functioned that way in 2021, having been sold as necessary in the pandemic emergency, but the expansion expired and the subsidy reverted to $2,000.
