Comics legend J.M. DeMatteis has partnered with Spellbound Comics to launch an exciting new line of titles, collectively referred to as the “DeMultiverse.” DeMatteis distinguished himself with definitive runs on The Defenders and Justice League as well as penning Kraven’s Last Hunt. Now he is bringing readers four brand-new titles, each from a different genre, running from superheroes to westerns.
After a career in music criticism, J.M. DeMatteis made a name for himself at Marvel Comics in the early 1980s, writing The Defenders and Captain America. While working at Marvel, he wrote the creator-owned Moonshadow, a deeply personal and philosophical work featuring fully-painted art by Jon J. Muth; the book was the first fully painted graphic novel in America. DeMatteis jumped ship to DC mid-decade, helping Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire retool the Justice League to critical and fan acclaim. In the years since, DeMatteis has continued to write, having memorable runs on Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Now, nearly 50 years into an honored career, DeMatteis has partnered with new publisher SpellBound Comics to bring to life what might be his best creation yet: the “DeMultiverse.”
The DeMultiverse consists of four new titles: the superhero book Anyman, Wisdom, a supernatural western, the fantasy-tinged Layla in the Lands of After and Godsend, a science fiction title in the vein of Philip K. Dick. Each book will have a debut issue, and fans will have a say in which book gets to continue onward. All four debut issues will also be collected into a special hardcover omnibus featuring a number of extras. Art duties for Anyman will be handled by David Baldeon and Wisdom will be illustrated by Tom Mandrake; Shawn McManus is penciling Layla in the Lands of After and Matthew Dow Smith will handle the art on Godsend. The four books will be for sale via Kickstarter launching in October and Spellbound’s website.

DeMatteis has had a career many can only dream of, having worked for a variety of publishers on a wide range of characters, and now he is delivering his most expansive work yet: the DeMultiverse. Each title is unique, covering a variety of genres, ensuring something for everybody; fans of westerns (or horror) will enjoy Wisdom while Layla in the Lands of After is perfect for young adult readers. DeMatteis promises a “mind-warping” experience on Godsend, invoking the legendary Moonshadow. Even when writing superheroes, DeMatteis aims higher and Anyman is cut from cloth. This diversity of genres is a testament to DeMatteis’ creativity and mastery of the form and the artists he has picked to bring his creations to life are some of the best working in the field today.
Very few creators have attempted something on the scale of the DeMultiverse, and it promises to be among DeMatteis’ best work. As mentioned earlier, J.M. DeMatteis is coming up on 50 years in comic books and The DeMultiverse, to be published by Spellbound Comics, serves as the crowning achievement of an amazing career.
