The electric cars are under the magnifying glass in this period, both for the large number of admirers, but also for the numerous detractors. We often read news of accidents involving battery-powered cars, precisely because of the risk that this component could catch fire, and make rescue operations difficult.

But in recent days a video has been making the rounds on the internet showing an accident involving an electric car Audi e-tron, with a completely different epilogue, never seen before. The video was first shared on Reddit:

In the images, albeit with a rather distant shot, we see the collision of an Audi e-tron, which goes through a red light, with a Toyota. After the battle, the German electric car does a carambola, and a large, flat body is clearly seen flying off.

It’s about the batterypositioned in the center of the vehicle, skateboarding as they say in the jargon, which in the video strip across the width of the roadway, finishing its run near some trees on the opposite side. Those who witnessed the clash then also took photos, from which the accumulator can be seen in state of combustion.

Audi e-tron crash

Richmond Police Officer Dennis Hwang told local media: “The battery pack of Audi, an electric vehicle, was ejected from the vehicle and burst into flames. To our knowledge, this is the first such case where an EV battery pack is ejected after a collision“.

Although to a casual analysis (read online in discussion groups) this may seem like a safety procedure, to prevent the car from catching fire completely, with the occupants, in reality it is perhaps even more dangerous, with a body weighing several hundred kg projected without any control, with the risk of seriously injuring even unsuspecting bystanders. Audi has not yet commented on the incident.
