One of Deadpool’s comic book co-creators suggests that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Deadpool 3 is more than just a continuation of the Fox franchise. Deadpool 3‘s cast sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth, alongside many actors and characters from the two previous movies of the anti-hero. Deadpool 3 is also a very special movie due to it being responsible for introducing Reynolds’ Wade Wilson to the MCU, as well as finally having an accurate meeting between Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Wolverine’s presence appears to drastically change the film.
On Twitter, Deadpool comic book co-creator Rob Liefeld claimed that Deadpool 3 is “WAY more of a Wolverine movie” than just a Wade Wilson adventure.
Liefeld’s words make sense, as Jackman’s Wolverine return is a big deal, since the actor was thought to have retired from the role with 2017’s Logan. If Jackman came back for Deadpool 3, it must have been for a very good reason.
Liefeld’s comment suggest that Deadpool 3 will actually be more of a team-up movie than just a Deadpool film featuring Wolverine. That makes perfect sense and is not something that will be met with any kind of resistance, as the encounter between an accurate portrayal of Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine has been a major request for years. The characters first shared the screen in the ill-received X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009. There, Reynolds’ Wade Wilson was completely butchered by the end of the film, barely resembling Deadpool.
Now, Reynolds not only gets to play a comic book-accurate version of Deadpool opposite Jackman’s Wolverine, but he does so in the MCU. Jackman had talked about possibly joining the MCU and interacting with the Avengers in the past, with the actor expressing interest in that happening. If Liefeld is correct about Deadpool 3 being more of a Wolverine movie than people expect it to be, then the added focus on Jackman’s mutant could lead to the character interacting with some MCU heroes.
Deadpool 3‘s rumors claim that Loki‘s Time Variance Authority will go after the character for messing with several timelines at the end of Deadpool 2. With the possible extra focus on Wolverine, a path the movie could take is to have Logan help Deadpool escape the TVA by traveling through different universes. Also, Jackman previously said he pulls double duty in Deadpool 3, and that couples up nicely with Liefeld’s comment. It is possible that Deadpool 3 will focus on two different versions of Wolverine, perhaps with Jackman surprisingly being revealed as the MCU’s Wolverine, although that is unlikely.
