Marvel continues to rack up some big bucks with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as the hit sequel is at the top of the box office by a landslide with its second weekend in theaters. The movie has pulled in $61 million in North American theaters, pulling up its numbers to $291.8 million domestically with a total haul so far of $613 million. Doctor Strange 2 did see a pretty sharp drop compared to its opening weekend, falling by 67%.
The animated hit The Bad Guys continues to do well, even if it hasn’t come close to scoring the profits earned by Doctor Strange 2 this weekend. In its fourth weekend, the film has scored another $6.9 million in ticket sales. That puts its domestic total up to $66.2 million. The movie, from DreamWorks and Universal Pictures, follows a group of criminal animals pretending to reform themselves as model citizens.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 holds its place in the No. 3 spot as well. After becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, the movie has earned another $4.5 million in domestic ticket sales. They can throw that on the pile for $175.6 million overall earned in North America. It has topped $338 million when factoring in overseas sales. There will be more where this came from as a sequel has already been announced, as has a spinoff series following Idris Elba’s Knuckles.
Firestarter Comes Up Short
Unfortunately for Firestarter, the Stephen King reboot has not done well with its opening weekend. It has drawn just $3.8 million at theaters, a number well below its $12 million budget. Another $2 million was earned internationally, and even combining these totals, the film is not close to making back its budget. It’s worth noting that the new Firestarter had a day-and-date release, as it was also made available for streaming on Peacock, but these numbers are certainly not what Universal Pictures was hoping for.
Underneath Firestarter, the acclaimed hit Everything Everywhere All at Once made $3.3 million to stay in the top 5. This film is now in its eighth weekend, making its continued success all the more remarkable. Its ticket sales have been consistent as word of mouth spreads, as while the movie did not have the same levels of marketing compared to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, more and more filmgoers have been seeing it each weekend based on the very positive reviews.
