Donkey Kong designer Shigeru Miyamoto explains how the character’s redesign in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a throwback to the original game.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s redesign of Donkey Kong has been explained by the character’s original designer. The Illumination Entertainment project, which stars Chris Pratt as Mario and is due in theaters on April 7, will feature an ensemble packed with the legendary characters from the Super Mario video game universe. This includes Donkey Kong, the iconic gorilla, who will be voiced by Seth Rogen alongside Fred Armisen as his grandfather Cranky Kong.

During a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, original character designer Shigeru Miyamoto appeared to participate in a discussion about what fans can expect from Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He revealed that the character was redesigned from his current video game incarnation in order to fit the “comical personality” of the film. In order to do this, they crafted a design that is more “reminiscent of the original character” despite being rendered in the 3D animation of contemporary games. Read Miyamoto’s full quote below:

For this movie, we seized the opportunity to give him a comical personality and design reminiscent of the original character.

How Donkey Kong Will Fit Into The Mario Bros. Movie

Donkey Kong Crushing Mario in Super Mario Bros Movie

So far, plot details of The Super Mario Bros. Movie have been kept largely under wraps. What is known about the overarching plot is the fact that Mario, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), and various other heroes from the Mushroom Kingdom must team up to go on a grand adventure and stop the Koopa king Bowser (Keegan-Michael Key) from taking over the world. The only appearance Donkey Kong makes in the trailer is in a gladiator-style match that Mario seems to have been forced to participate in.

The sequence in the trailer is somewhat reminiscent of the iconic “we’re friends from work” scene where Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes Thor and Hulk battle in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. If The Super Mario Bros. Movie sees fit to extend that homage even further, it’s possible that Mario and Donkey Kong will then join forces for the rest of the movie to help bring down Bowser. It’s currently unknown what forces compel the two to battle in the first place, but should Donkey Kong join Mario’s party, he would become an indispensable help on their mission to save the Mushroom Kingdom.

However, it could be the case that the filmmakers want to keep Donkey Kong as a purely antagonistic presence in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. If they are intentionally hearkening back to the 1981 game Donkey Kong, where Mario was originally introduced, that could certainly be the case. However, with the goofy sensibility the film wants to bring to the table, it’s possible that anything can happen as far as the gorilla is concerned.
