The criticisms of the new course of Twitter by Elon Musk continue incessantly, and at the same time the provocative tweets published by the new owner. The situation is constantly evolving, and we need to be able to interpret the messages giving them the right weight. What is certain is that when the author of the posts is Musk himself, he struggles to understand which one is boundary between provocation and real intentions.
This is the case with the consequences that could occur in the event that Google and Apple decide to exclude Twitter from their respective platformsa (remote) hypothesis that some analysts have launched on social networks if in the future non-compliance of the app with the terms and conditions of the Play Store and App Store should be detected.
It all started with a message posted on Twitter by the conservative American political commentator Elizabeth Wheeler, which launches the idea of a smartphone made by Musk. “Man builds rockets to mars, a stupid little smartphone would be easy, right?“
The response from the person concerned was not long in coming:
I obviously hope it doesn’t come to this, but yes, if there was no other choice, I would make an alternative phone.
Remember Freedom Phone? It was the free smartphone, based on FreedomOS (a reworked version of Android), complete with a proprietary app store and pre-installed Parler, wanted last year by billionaire (in bitcoin) Erik Finman. As imaginable, the project failed almost immediately. L’idea by Elon Musk – if you can define it that way – looks a lot like this case: if nobody wants me, then I build my own smartphone with proprietary store, ready to counter iOS and Android. There are also similarities with HTC First, the 2013 Facebook Phone which, also in this case, was not successful on the market.
Let’s read it at least for now as a simple provocation from Elon Musk, asked on the subject but probably also caught a little by surprise. Among the followers of the commentator, however, the idea was liked: the poll “would you switch to a tELONphone?51.2% of the 130,000 voters answered yes.
While dreaming on a Twitter-phone there are far more urgent issues to resolve. The reference goes to layoffs in the company, and in particular that of Sinead McSweeney, VP, Global Public Policy and Philanthropy of Twitter based in Ireland. The manager has obtained from the High Court of Dublin the blocking of her dismissal which occurred after the lack of an (affirmative) response from hardcore commitment to the corporate cause wanted by Musk. Since she did not respond to the email sent by the owner, her accounts were blocked soon after and she was fired. Indeed, she is “voluntarily resigned” having not accepted the new conditions. The case will be discussed in court these days.
