Radio 6646 is a new compact radio from Ericsson which supports all standards, from 2G to 5G, and three bands (900, 800 and 700MHz). Its main feature is that compared to similar appliances, it is rarely able to reduce energy consumption by 40%, thus helping providers to reduce costs and CO2 emissions in the environment.
Ericsson Radio 6646, to extend 5G coverage in a sustainable way
Ericsson’s new Radio 6646 is lighter and more compact than the company’s previous solutions, thus simplifying installation and also reducing implementation costs, as it will reduce the number of towers needed to guarantee coverage. In the case of single-band sites, this device is capable of doing the work of nine radios.
Three bands are supported, 900, 800 and 700 MHz, with the latter being key in 5G Stand Alone installationsi.e. those installations that do not share devices with pre-existing 4G networks.

As already mentioned, however, the most interesting feature is the low consumption: it uses 40% less energy than comparable models. According to Ericsson, the annual savings are the equivalent of 40 full charges for an electric car.
“Our new energy efficient radio uniquely combines spectrum capabilities in an easy to install model“, explains David Hammarwall, Head of Product Area Networks at Ericsson. “This will simplify implementations and extend 5G coverage, starting with Europe. With this latest innovation, operators can scale up standalone 5G deployments, introducing new applications for consumers, enterprises and mission-critical communications“.
“Ericsson’s new Radio 6646 will offer a highly compact and flexible solution to expand 5G coverage in a very cost-effective yet practical and sustainable way – the footprint and power consumption achieved is something we believe will be a powerful driver for 5G. and we are looking forward to the first implementations in Spain“, he comments Vicente AbadRAN Technology and Support Manager of Telefonica Spain.
